Sweet, Joseph (1867-1953)

Joseph Sweet was a boilermaker for the Canadian Pacific Railway. He lived at 1054 Denman Street from 1920 to 1922.

 

Early Life

Joseph Sweet was born on April 8, 1867 in Ottawa, Ontario. His parents were Thomas Sweet (1824-1868) and Caroline Flegg (sometimes spelled “Flagg”) (1826-1890).

In 1881, Joseph was living in Ottawa with the family of Henry McBride. Mr. McBride was a boilermaker.

 

Marriage to Harriet Elizabeth Collyer

On December 1, 1892, in Ottawa, Joseph married Harriet Elizabeth Collyer. (She was often called “Elizabeth.”) She was born in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England on June 19, 1868. Her parents were Joseph George Collyer (1843-1893) and Mary Turner (1835-1870).

 

Life in Ottawa

Joseph worked as a boilermaker in Ottawa. In the late 1890s, the Sweet family was living on First Avenue in Ottawa.

In 1899, Joseph was wrongfully arrested for assaulting an Ottawa woman. It was a case of mistaken identity, and Joseph was quickly released.

In 1901 and 1911, the Sweet family was still living in Ottawa. Joseph continued to work as a railway boiler-maker.

 

Military Service

On January 2, 1917, in Ottawa, Joseph signed his attestation papers to serve with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. (He gave his birth year as 1872, rather than 1867.)

He served in France, and he was discharged from the military forces on January 31, 1919, as being medically unfit for further war service.

 

To Vancouver

Joseph and other members of his family first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1920. They were living at 1054 Denman Street. Joseph was a boilermaker.

Joseph lived at the following addresses in Vancouver.

Joseph continued to work as a boiler maker until he retired about 1935.

Harriet (Elizabeth) died in Vancouver on March 4, 1945.

Joseph died in Vancouver on July 27, 1953.

Joseph and Harriet (Elizabeth) had the following children.

 

Ella Grace Sweet

Ella Grace Sweet was born in Ottawa, Ontario on June 8, 1893. (She was often called “Grace.”)

On April 28, 1915, in Ottawa, she married John Ross Thomson, who was a patent attorney. He was born in Vancouver on September 2, 1889. His parents were Rev. Thomas Gavin Thomson (1850-1912) and Mary Spence.

On November 28, 1916, in Ottawa, John signed his attestation papers to serve with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. (He gave his birth year as 1891 rather than the actual year of 1889.) He served in Canada with the Queen’s Field Ambulance. On April 16, 1919, he was discharged from the military force as “medically unfit.”

By 1929, John and Ella were in Vancouver.

In 1930 they were living at 1025 West Pender Street. Ross was a patent attorney.

In the late 1940s, John and Ella were living at 1915 West 35th Avenue with Ella’s father and Ella’s sister, Ethelyn. Dorothy Agnes King (1889-1972) was also living with them.

Grace died in Vancouver on January 24, 1984.

 

Ida Sweet

Ida Sweet was born in Ottawa, Ontario on September 15, 1895.

She died in Ottawa on September 16, 1895.

 

George Ernest Sweet

George Ernest Sweet was born in Ottawa, Ontario on September 17, 1894.

He worked as a machinist.

On August 31, 1925, in Vancouver, he married Amy Elizabeth Hearn. She was born in Vancouver on April 9, 1899. Her parents were Francis Hearn and Amy Welsh.

George died in Surrey, British Columbia on August 27, 1977.

Amy died in Surrey on March 18, 1981.

 

Rupert Sweet

Rupert Sweet was born in Ottawa on September 6, 1898, (although one source says August 6).

He died three hours later on September 6, 1898.

 

Ethelyn Sweet

Ethelyn Sweet was born in Ottawa, Ontario on October 14, 1896.

She worked as a lumber dealer.

She did not marry.

She died in Vancouver on July 23, 1980.

 

Katherine (Kathleen) Elizabeth Sweet

Katherine Elizabeth Sweet was born in Ottawa, Ontario on August 5, 1899. (She was sometimes called “Kathleen.”)

On September 24, 1924, in Vancouver, she married Robert Atkins, who was a butcher. He was born in Cardiff, Wales, on January 3, 1899. His parents were William Atkins and Maria Hart.

Robert died in Vancouver on July 23, 1983,

Kathleen died in North Vancouver, British Columbia on March 10, 1996.

 

Arthur Mortimer Sweet

Arthur Mortimer Sweet was born in Ottawa, Ontario on December 15, 1902.

He worked as a printer.

He married Pauline Antinock. She was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on June 4, 1898. Her parents were John Antinock and Ann Stika.

Pauline died in Vancouver on January 30, 1991.

Arthur died in Vancouver on May 30, 1993.

“Sudden Death; Rev. Mr. Thomson of Westboro Passed Away Saturday,” The Ottawa Citizen, March 25, 1912, page 7, column 5: “With tragic suddenness Rev. Thos. G. Thomson, pastor of Westboro Presbyterian Church, died Saturday at his residence, Richmond road, Westboro, death being due to an attack of acute indigestion. Up till the moment of the fatal seizure Mr. Thomson seemed to be in his customary health, and was moving about the house as active and bright as usual, when he was seen by Dr. J.S. Nelson, Westboro, who was visiting him in an unprofessional capacity. Soon afterwards Dr. Nelson was hastily summoned back, only to find that Mr. Thomson had succumbed. He is survived by a widow and one son.”

“Rev. Mr. Thomson’s Funeral,” The Ottawa Citizen, March 27, 1912, page 13, columns 6-7:

“Many friends and relatives of the late Rev. Mr. Thomas G. Thompson [sic], pastor of Westboro Presbyterian church, whose death occurred at his residence on Saturday morning, attended the funeral, which was held from [the] family residence at 2 o’clock yesterday afternoon. The late reverend gentleman was well known and very popular, his numerous sterling qualities making him many friends. Interment took place in Beechwood cemetery.

The funeral service was conducted in the church of which the deceased has been pastor. The service was under the auspices of the Ottawa Presbytery, and the members turned out in large numbers. Rev. J.W.H. Milne, with Rev. W.A. Melliray and Rev. Dr. Armstrong officiated at the service.

Rev. R.B. McCrae, a brother-in-law, was also present, and other Presbyterian ministers as well as the local ministers attended. The funeral was held under the auspices of the Masonic order, the members of which turned out in large numbers to pay their last respects to their brother.

The chief mourners were his widow, Mrs. T.G. Thompson, one son, Ross, and Rev. Mr. B.R. McCrae, brother in-in-law of Cranbrook, Huron county. Many words and message of condolence were received by the sorrowing family.”
