Blow, Edmund (1889-1975)

Edmund Blow was a carpenter and builder. He was also a janitor for the Sylvia Court Apartments, which were at 1154 Gilford Street. He lived at 1154 Gilford Street from 1917 to 1919, and at 1876 Pendrell Street in 1920 and 1921.

He was born in St Albans, England, on June 8, 1889. His father was Frederick Blow (1863-1953), who was a building contractor; his mother was Elizabeth Moon (1864-1944).

It appears that Edmund was still living in England in 1911. He may have married Ida Hilda Hoerling on June 29, 1911, in Shenley, Hertford, England. Her father was Augustus Hoerling.

Edmund arrived in Vancouver about 1915, and stayed until about 1923, when he moved to the Los Angeles area of California. In 1924, while he was travelling to the United States, he indicated that he was still married. He became a naturalized United States citizen in 1929.

It appears that he was divorced some time before the 1930 United States census. By 1930, he was living in Whittier, California.

On June 21, 1930, in Orange County, California, he married June Campbell (née Mayes). She was born in Oklahoma, about 1892. Her father was George Mayes; her mother was Susan Martin. June was a widow, and in 1930 she operated a beauty parlour.

In 1940, Edmund was living in Signal Hill City in Los Angeles County. The 1940 Census listed his name as “Edward Blow.” He indicated that he was a widower. He was working as a cabinet-maker.

In 1942, when Edmund registered with the United States draft registration system, he was living in Long Beach, California. He was working for John William Punt (1895-1975), a builder who was originally from Iowa.

Edmund died in Los Angeles, California, on October 25, 1975.
