Reginald Symes was a lawyer who lived at 1950 Haro Street in 1913 and 1914.

Reginald Symes was born in Broxbourne, Hertfordshire, England on September 13, 1881. His parents were Alfred Symes and Annie Jane Hartley. Alfred Symes was a stockbroker.

Reginald went to school at Marlborough; later he studied law at Pembroke College at the University of Cambridge. In 1905 he was called to the Inner Temple in London and he practiced on the South-Eastern Circuit in England.

It appears that they rented their accommodations for their first years in Vancouver. From 1917 to 1919, they were living in Dr. George S. Gordon’s house at 3889 Granville Street.

Aileen returned to England from time to time, sometimes with her daughter, Nancy.

Reginald was a talented golfer. In 1920 he won the Bostock Cup, which went to British Columbia’s amateur golfing champion.

For many years Reginald practised law in British Columbia with Alexander Harold Douglas, who lived at 1890 Alberni Street in 1913 and 1914. (Their law firm continued in business for many years, eventually becoming Douglas, Symes & Brissenden. The firm lasted until it was dissolved in 2000.)

About 1932, Reginald and Aileen moved to a new house at 2810 Southwest Marine Drive.

Reginald died in Vancouver on June 20, 1948.

Aileen returned to England. She sometimes travelled to southern Europe and to the Canary Islands. She died in Madrid, Spain, on May 28, 1968.

 

Reginald and Aileen had a daughter.

 

Nancy Isobel Symes

Nancy Isobel Symes was born in Vancouver on September 27, 1912.

She attended Crofton House School in Vancouver, and later studied arts at the University of British Columbia and at Newnham College in Cambridge.

On April 8, 1937, in Vancouver, Nancy married Henry Pybus (“Budge”) Bell-Irving. He was born in Vancouver on January 21, 1913. His parents were Henry Beattie Bell-Irving (1887-1959) and Anne Hilda Pybus (1891-1977).

Henry attended Shawnigan Lake School on Vancouver Island, Loretto School in Musselburgh, Scotland, and the University of British Columbia. Later he worked in the fish-canning and lumber businesses.

Like many members of the Bell-Irving family, Henry was active in military affairs. He joined the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada militia in the early 1930s. When the Second World War began, he went overseas, where he took part in several military actions. He was the commander of the first Canadian troops that entered Amsterdam when the Netherlands were liberated. His awards included the D.S.O. and the O.B.E. He retired at the end of the war with the rank of brigadier-general.

After the war, Henry returned to Canada. For a short time he was the Canadian managing director for a British toy company. Later he became a prominent realtor in British Columbia.

From 1978 to 1983, he was the lieutenant-governor of British Columbia. He received the Order of Canada in 1985 and the Order of British Columbia in 1990.

Nancy died in North Vancouver, British Columbia, on July 24, 1997.

Henry died in Vancouver on September 21, 2002.

Nancy and Henry had three sons: Henry (“Hal”); Roderick (“Rod”); and Donald.
