(It appears that he and his wife were at 1996 York Street in Vancouver at the time of the 1911 Canada census.)

Family Background

Harold Edmund Glencairn Penny was born on August 25, 1882, in Nagpur, India. His father was Edmund Penny (1852-1919), a civil engineer who had attended Cheltenham College and the Royal Indian Engineering College.

Harold Edmund Glencairn Penny

In 1896, Harold Edmund Glencairn Penny attended St. Paul’s School, which was then located in the Hammersmith area of Greater London.

On March 9, 1910, Harold married Gladys Kathleen Stilles Foord. She was born on April 22, 1883, in Ramsgate, Kent, England. Her father was Major General William Octavius Foord (1838-1925), who had served in the Indian Mutiny in 1858, and in the Burmese War from 1885 to 1887. Gladys’s mother was Annie Sarah Louisa Cunningham (1861-1933).

In July 1910, Harold sailed to Canada on the steamship “Canada.” He described himself as a tourist, and his destination was Winnipeg, Manitoba.

In October 1910, Gladys sailed to Canada on the steamship “Royal Edward.” She was going to Winnipeg to join her husband.

At the time of the 1911 Canada census, Harold and Gladys were lodging with Reginald Pigott at 1996 York Street in Vancouver. Harold’s occupation was “clerk.”

Harold and Gladys were in Vancouver until about 1915.

By 1916, Harold was in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. In March 1916, he became a temporary sub-lieutenant in the reserve.

It appears that Harold and Gladys were divorced before 1917.

Harold married Louise Annetts in England. (There are two marriage records: one from 1917, and another from 1918.) Louise was born in Hungerford, Berkshire, England on September 12, 1888. Her father was Harry Annetts, who was a furniture dealer. Her mother was Eva Emma Watts.

After the First World War, Harold and Louise lived for some time in England. In 1924, Harold travelled to New York City. He said that his wife’s address was 148 Inverness Terrace in London.

At some point, Harold became a member of the Freemasons in England.

There is no sign of Harold and Louise in the Vancouver directories again until 1948.

In late 1948, Harold was working as the night elevator operator at the Vancouver Club. He died while working at the club, early on the morning of December 9, 1948.

Louise died in Vancouver on January 25, 1976.

Harold and Louise had a daughter.

Esme Yvonne Penny

Esme Yvonne Penny was born in Medway, Kent, England, on November 6, 1917.

She married Arthur Edward Cavendish Manlove. He was born in Estevan, Saskatchewan, on July 19, 1922. His father was Colin Arthur Manlove (1889-1963). His mother was Violet May Whitman (1895-1954).

Esme died in North Vancouver, British Columbia on August 9, 1983.

Arthur died in Burns Lake, British Columbia, on February 6, 1986.
