Wendell Burpee Farris was a lawyer and judge. He lived at 1833 Comox Street in 1918 and at 1844 Comox Street in 1919 and 1920. He was a brother of Bruce Mackenzie Farris, who was at 1034 Gilford Street in 1919. Another brother was John Wallace deBeque Farris (1878-1970), who was a lawyer and politician.

Wendell was born on August 26, 1886, in White’s Cove, New Brunswick. His father was Laughlin (or Lauchlan) Phineas Farris (1843–1925), a farmer and politician in New Brunswick. Wendell’s mother was Mary Louise Hay (1855-1926).

Wendell went to school in Fredericton, New Brunswick. He then attended the University of New Brunswick, and obtained a Bachelor of Civil Law at King’s College Law School in 1908.

He became a member of the New Brunswick bar in 1908.

In 1909, he became a member of the British Columbia bar. He was living in Nelson, British Columbia, and was in a law firm with James O’Shea (1864-1938).

He first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1913. He was living at 1659 Davie Street, and was a lawyer with Russell, Macdonald & Hancox, and Russell, Mowat, Hancox & Farris:

On July 22, 1914, in Toronto, Ontario, he married Katie Isabel Baird. She was born on July 26, 1885, in Woodstock, New Brunswick. Her father was Henry Paxton Baird. Her mother was Jessie Cooper.

In 1914, he was at 1677 Robson Street.

From 1914 to 1916, he was a lawyer in Revelstoke, British Columbia.

He appeared in the Vancouver directories again in 1918. He was living at 1833 Comox Street, and he was the senior partner in a law firm with John Emerson (1887-1926) and Roy Stanley Stultz (1891-1957).

In 1919 and 1920 Wendell was at 1844 Comox Street.

In 1921, he moved to 4311 Angus Street, and from then on he continued to live in the Shaughnessy area of Vancouver.

Along with his very successful career as a lawyer, he was also a director of several businesses, including mining, forestry, and oil companies.

He belonged to several clubs, including the Vancouver Club, the Terminal City Club, the Shaughnessy Heights Golf Club, the Jericho Golf and Country Club, and many others.

On May 6, 1942, he became the chief justice of the British Columbia Supreme Court.

He died in Vancouver on June 17, 1955.

Katie died in Vancouver on July 25, 1970.

 

Wendell and Katie had a son.

 

Kenneth Baird Farris (son of Wendell Burpee Farris)

Kenneth Baird Farris was born in Revelstoke, British Columbia in June 9, 1917.

On June 28, 1947, in Grand Falls, Victoria, New Brunswick, he married Betty Adeline Pirie.

In 1955, he was the president of the Kerrisdale Finance Company.

In 1969, he ran unsuccessfully as a candidate for the British Columbia legislature.
