Henry Edward Burnell was a butcher and grocer. He lived at 1839 Morton Avenue in 1920.

He was born in London, England on August 4, 1857. His father was Edward Burnell. According to a descendant of the family, Henry and his father were both pub landlords in London, England.

On August 19, 1878, at St. Botolph’s Aldgate, London, he married Caroline Edwards. [St. Botolph’s Aldgate, Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Botolph’s_Aldgate]. Caroline was born on August 4, 1850, in Horsedowns, Cornwall, England. [Horsedowns, Wikipedia article, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horsedowns.]

By 1881, Henry and Caroline were living at 34 Upper East Smithfield, Middlesex, England. Henry was a butcher journeyman.

Henry and Caroline eventually had four sons and two daughters, although the details of many of the children are not readily available.

The family appears to have arrived in Vancouver about 1919. They were living at 2325 West First Avenue. Henry was operating the Grandview Meat Market, which was a butcher and grocery operation at 1729 Commercial Drive.

In 1919, Caroline was a clerk for the Batiste Costume Company’s office at 809 – 318 Homer Street.

In 1920, the family moved to 1839 Morton Avenue.

By 1921, the family was living at no. 1 – 1631 Grant Street. In 1925, they had moved again, to 2915 West 37th Avenue.

Caroline died in Point Grey (Vancouver) on April 15, 1925. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Henry died in Burquitlam, near Vancouver, on June 11, 1927. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Henry Burnell, one of the six Burnell children, was an accountant for Western Grocers, a Winnipeg company whose business was at 97 Water Street. William Pitt Riley (1870-1954), had established Western Grocers in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in 1918. In Vancouver, Western Grocers were the successors to Lesson, Dickie and Gross. Henry was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, on July 8, 1889. He married Agnes Rose Fincham in Alberta in 1916. Henry died in West Vancouver on January 1, 1959. Agnes died in West Vancouver on November 11, 1963.

Another Burnell son, Alfred, married Ethel Waite in Vancouver in 1920. Alfred described himself as a chauffeur. In 1921, he was a bookkeeper for Western Grocers; by 1922, he was working for the Grandview Meat Market. Ethel was born in Bury, England. Her father, Richard Howard Waite, was a photographer; Ethel’s mother was Ada Mercer.

Another child of Henry Edward Burnell was Annie Marie Burnell. She was born in London, England, on December 6, 1885. She married George Claridge, who was a farmer. He was born on July 31, 1877, in Chatteris, England. Annie died in Burnaby, British Columbia, on September 21, 1959; George died in Vancouver on May 25, 1969.

Helen Joyce Claridge

George Claridge and Annie Marie Burnell had a daughter, Helen Joyce Claridge. She was born in Edson, Alberta, on July 29, 1919. On December 29, 1940, in Vancouver, Helen married Louis James Kuhn. He was born in West Vancouver, British Columbia, about 1918. His father was Charles Edward Kuhn. His mother was Marguerite Josephine Terwilliger. This marriage ended in divorce in Vancouver on September 29, 1950.

From 1951 to 1969, Helen was married to Rudolph Petschl. From 1970 to 2002 she was married to William Rosch.
