Martin James Ravey was born in Toronto, Ontario, on March 10, 1872. His parents were James Ravey (1842-1903) and Ruth Pirt (1844-1908).

James Ravey was a blacksmith. While he was in Vancouver, he worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway.

Marriage to Cecilia

On October 7, 1911, in Vancouver, Martin married Cecilia Estelle Leith Jardine. She was born in Neepawa, Manitoba on May 28, 1894. Her parents were John Francis Jardine (1861-1910) and Susan Gillis (1864-1944).

 

Martin’s Realty Business

Martin continued his realty and mining business through the 1940s.

In 1915, the Canadian Mining Journal published Martin’s article on natural resources in the Peace River Country.

Martin died in Vancouver on March 10, 1948. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Cecilia died in Vancouver on April 15, 1972. She was buried in Capilano View Cemetery in North Vancouver.

Celia Ruth Ravey

Celia Ruth Alexander was born in Vancouver on June 15, 1913.

On January 3, 1942, in Vancouver, she married Humphrey Alexander. He was a leading telegraphist in the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve. He was born in Hampshire, England about 1921. His parents were William Alexander and Mary Kenyon Birch.

Humphrey died in November 1998, after 56 years of marriage.

Celia died in Vancouver on July 22, 2011. She was buried in Capilano View Cemetery in North Vancouver.

 

Gloria Ann Ravey

Gloria (“Glorie”) Ann Ravey was born in Vancouver on May 25, 1915 (although some sources say that she was born in Burnside, Manitoba about 1912).

She married Bo Anders Orne Linderholm. This marriage ended in divorce.

She died in West Vancouver, British Columbia on September 4, 1994.

 

Martin Bain Ravey

Martin Bain Ravey was born in Vancouver on June 10, 1917.

He married Althea Bell.

Patricia Suzanne Ravey

Patricia Suzanne Ravey was born in Vancouver on September 29, 1919.

She worked as a mining consultant. She did not marry.

She died in North Vancouver, British Columbia, on April 15, 1968.

She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Ruth Ravey, obituary, Vancouver World, August 22, 1908, page 5: “Ravey, Mrs. Ruth Ravey, relict of the late James Ravey, passed away at an early hour this morning at the Burrard Sanitarium after an illness that had lasted for several months. The deceased was 64 years of age and was one of the best known among the pioneer residents of the city, having lived here for over twenty years. Three sons and a daughter mourn her death, all of them being residents of the city except one son who is at present in Dawson. Mrs. Ravey had been troubled with asthma for some time and lately was afflicted with heart failure, which ultimately caused her death this morning. The funeral will take place at 10 o’clock next Monday morning from the family residence, 554 Hornby street.”

Two daughters are flying here from new York. Besides his wife, Mr. Ravey leaves three daughters, Mrs. Alexander, New York, and Gloria and Patricia. There is one son, Martin, living here, and two brothers, Ed and Ralston, the latter a lifelong member of the Vancouver fire department.

Mr. Ravey was a mining man and well known in Cariboo and other parts of the province. He had lived here since childhood, having been a member of the first class which opened at Kingsway and Tenth, 60 years ago.”

“One of British Columbia’s early prospectors, Martin J. Ravey, 75, 3992 Point Grey Road, died yesterday.

Ravey, who specialized in gold mining, was one of the first students of Mount Pleasant school, which opened at Tenth and Kingsway in 1888. At that time, Kingsway was known as Westminster Road.

His family had settled at Thirteenth and Kingsway.

Surviving are his wife, three daughters, one son, and two brothers.

Funeral arrangements will be announced later.”
