Burley, William Harry (1882-1958)

William Harry Burley was a building contractor and real estate broker. He and his brother, Leonard Burley, lived at 835 Park Road (later called Lagoon Drive) from 1909 to 1911. William sometimes spelled his last name “Burleigh”; Leonard generally used “Burley” for his last name.

William was born in Cheshire, England, on October 19, 1882. His father was Edward Arthur Burley, who was born in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, about 1850. William’s mother was Sarah (sometimes called Sarah Sleigh, and sometimes Sarah Murray).

William and Leonard first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1909. They established a company called W.H. Burley & Co., which combined building contracting and real estate. In 1910, they had an office at number 25 in the Inns of Court Building.

By 1912, William and Leonard had moved to 2601 Ash Street. W.H. Burley & Co. were in room 20 of the Inns of Court Building.

On February 26, 1913, William married Myrtle Elizabeth Bonnett. She was born in Wisconsin on January 5, 1882. Her parents were Benjamin Bonnette and Anna Stephens (or Stevens).

By 1918, William and Myrtle were living at 685 Irving Street in Portland, Oregon. William was a real estate broker.

By 1930, William and Myrtle were living in Los Angeles, California, along with Myrtle’s mother, Anna M. Bonnett.

In 1940, William and Myrtle were living in Los Angeles. William was a real estate broker. The 1940 United States census said that William’s birthplace was Washington State.

William died in Los Angeles on May 17, 1958.

Myrtle died in Los Angeles on November 12, 1960.

 

Leonard Burley

Leonard Burley was born in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, on September 9, 1879. He was a real estate broker, and later became a mining prospector.

In 1915, Leonard was living in Squamish, British Columbia. On January 29, 1915, in Vancouver, he married Nellie Paisley. She was born in Hawick, Roxburghshire, Scotland on July 23, 1888. Her parents were Charles Paisley (born 1855), a wool merchant, and Agnes Morrison Smith (born 1858 or 1860; died 1924).

Leonard died in North Vancouver, British Columbia, on June 20, 1956. He was buried in Capilano View Cemetery in North Vancouver.

Nellie later married Cowan Mcleod. He was born on May 11, 1890, in Edinburgh, Scotland. He had been married before, to Emily Jane Johnson (1898-1949).

Cowan died in North Vancouver on November 21, 1970.

Nellie died in North Vancouver on April 9, 1976.

Leonard Burley’s brother in law, Charles Paisley, fought with the 102nd Battallion in the First World War, from 1916 to 1918. Although he was wounded during the war, he survived his wounds and returned to Vancouver. He never married. He died in Vancouver on March 19, 1939. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

  2. Leonard Burley’s brother in law, Charles Paisley, fought with the 102nd Bn in the Great War, from 1916 to 1918. He was wounded at the same time & place as my great-great uncle on November 2nd, 1918. He survived his wounds and returned to Vancouver. He is buried in Mountain View Cemetery, just off Prince Edward Street & East 33 Ave.
