Gowan, Frederick Cutcliffe (1864-1934)

Frederick Cutcliffe Gowan was an insurance agent and broker. He lived at 1154 Gilford Street in 1917 and 1918 and at 1996 Pendrell Street in 1919 and 1920.

Frederick Cutcliffe Gowan was born in Dulwich, Surrey, England, on April 17, 1864. His father was Charles Cecil Gowan (1833-1895), who was a stockbroker. His mother was Elizabeth Anne Cutcliffe (1827-possibly 1921).

In 1891, Frederick was living with his parents in Camberwell, Surrey, England. He was a stock exchange worker.

In 1894, Frederick was at 27 Piccadilly, W. in London.

In 1901, he was living on Montagu Road in Datchet, Buckinghamshire, England. He was a stockbroker.

In 1909, in Wandsworth, London, Frederick married Anna Sophie Louse Meyer. She was born in Germany in September 1866.

Frederick and Anna were in Vancouver by 1911. Frederick was a clerk with the Canadian Pacific Railway.

Frederick and Anna lived at the following addresses in Vancouver.

1911 1636 Barclay Street (1911 Canada Census)
1912 and 1913 not listed under Vancouver names
1914 1221 Georgia Street
1915 no address under Vancouver names
1916 1348 Robson Street
1917 and 1918 number 605, 1154 Gilford Street
1919 and 1920 1996 Pendrell Street

In 1918, Frederick enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force to serve in the First World War. He gave his birth year as 1871 (instead of 1864, his actual birth year). He received a discharge fairly quickly for being medically unfit.

Certificate of Discharge, Frederick Cutcliffe Gowan, April 22, 1918; http://central.bac-lac.gc.ca/.item/?op=pdf&app=CEF&id=B3686-S017.

Certificate of Discharge, Frederick Cutcliffe Gowan, April 22, 1918; http://central.bac-lac.gc.ca/.item/?op=pdf&app=CEF&id=B3686-S017.

In 1919, Frederick was working as a broker. In 1920, he was an employee of Canadian Pacific Railway’s freight department.

Frederick did not appear in the Vancouver directories after 1920. It appears that he went to live in England, and that he died in Kensington district in 1934.

No further information is available for Anna.
