Edward’s Early Life and Marriage

Edward studied at Egremont Academy, and then went to Liverpool, where he worked for seven years with Stead Brothers, who were cotton brokers. He then went to live in North America for three years, before returning to England.

On October 7, 1876, in Salford, Lancashire, Edward married Anna Robinson. She was born on February 20, 1852 (or about 1857]. Her parents were John and Jane Robinson. John Robinson was a tobacco manufacturer.

Edward and his family remained in Manchester, where Edward ran a business that made leather and cotton goods.

 

To North America

In 1886, the Heaps family sailed from Liverpool to Boston, Massachusetts. According to the immigration document, their intended destination was the United States, and they were planning to be permanent residents.

The Heaps family spent about three years in the eastern United States and Canada. According to one source, they went to New Brunswick; according to another source, they went to Oshawa, Ontario, where Edward operated a furniture business. They arrived in Vancouver about 1889.

Edward first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1890. He was operating a furniture factory, and living at 1130 Howe Street.

After arriving in Vancouver, Edward built a sawmill and a sash and door and furniture factory on False Creek.

These enterprises were very successful at first, and Edward was a prominent member of the Vancouver business community. The lumber business had two main plants: one at Cedar Cove in Vancouver and another at Ruskin, British Columbia.

Edward was an alderman on the Vancouver city council from 1905 to 1907.

In 1907, E.H. Heaps and Co. became an incorporated company.

The Heaps company had a building at Ruskin Station.

In 1910, a fire destroyed the Heaps sawmill at Ruskin.

In 1910, Edward went to Europe for several months. He returned in July 1911 with news of several investments in Vancouver businesses.

In 1912, Edward started the Heaps Engineering Company Limited.

During the First World War, the Heaps businesses ran into financial difficulties, and some had to go into receivership.

The Heaps businesses were still operating in the 1920s, and were using the name of Heaps and Sons Limited. A receiver was still involved in running the business.

From 1920 to 1925, Edward and Anna appeared in the electoral registers of London, England.

Kate Eden Heaps was born in Chorlton, Lancashire, England on May 19, 1878.

She came to North America with her parents in 1886.

She did not marry.

She died in Vancouver on July 20, 1956. She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

 

Edward Moore Heaps

Edward Moore Heaps was born in Chorlton, Lancashire on February 11, 1880.

He came to North America with his parents in 1886.

He worked as a director of Heaps Engineering Company until he retired in 1945.

He did not marry.

He died in Vancouver on November 20, 1950. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

 

James Wilson Heaps

James Wilson Heaps was born in Chorlton, Lancashire on October 3, 1881.

He came to North America with his parents in 1886.

He worked as a lumberman.

On June 24, 1908, in Nanaimo, British Columbia, he married Gertrude Mabel Horne. She was born in Nanaimo on August 29, 1884. Her parents were Adam Henry Horne and Emily Cooper (Mr. Horne was the postmaster in Nanaimo.)

James died in Vancouver on August 2, 1954. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Gertrude died in Vancouver on December 12, 1964. She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby.

 

John Heaps

John Heaps was born in Chorlton, Lancashire on January 4, 1883.

He came to North America with his parents in 1886.

He worked as a mechanical engineer with the Heaps Engineering Company.

On October 17, 1905, in Vancouver, he married Margaret White (or “Fox-White”). She was born in London, England on February 2, 1882. Her parents were Edward Fox-White and Margaret McKenzie.

John died in Surrey, British Columbia on October 15, 1955.

Margaret died in Vancouver on February 3, 1969.

 

Arthur Robinson Heaps

Arthur Robinson Heaps was born in Ashton Under Lyne (or Fairfield), Lancashire on March 19, 1885.

He came to North America with his parents in 1886.

He worked as a lumberman

On June 18, 1925, in Vancouver, he married Emily Lambert Withers. She was born in Sundown, Isle of Wight on June 29, 1885. Her parents were John William Steward Withers and Emily Sayers.

Arthur died in Vancouver on September 20, 1956. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Emily died in Burnaby on July 30, 1982. She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby.

 

Ellen Gertrude Heaps

Ellen Gertrude Heaps was born in Vancouver on June 25, 1890.

She died on December 28, 1890. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in VAncvouer.

 

Constance Anna Heaps

Constance Anna Heaps was born in Vancouver on September 15, 1892.

She studied at Crofton House School in Vancouver.

She worked as an accountant with Heaps and Son, which was a the family’s wholesale lumber firm.

She did not marry.

She retired in 1947.

She died in Vancouver on March 21, 1950. She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

 

Elsie Frankland Heaps

Elsie Frankland Heaps was born in Vancouver on April 30, 1897.

She was a music teacher.

She did not marry.

She died in Duncan, British Columbia on April 25, 1973.
