Whalen Pulp and Paper Mills Limited

William Whalen’s business activities were associated with timber and pulp and paper. At first the pulp business was successful, but changing economic conditions eventually forced the business into receivership, resulting in a re-organized company structure that did not include William.

In 1910, the British Columbia Sulphite Fibre Company started building a pulp mill at Mill Creek, on the west side of Howe Sound near Squamish, British Columbia. The mill started operating in 1912.

In 1917, Whalen Pulp and Paper Mills Ltd. purchased the British Columbia Sulphite Fibre Company, along with other pulp mill facilities on B.C.’s west coast.

The assets included a mill at Swanson Bay.

Several prominent financial and business experts joined the firm. George Stevenson Harrison, the manager of the Merchants Bank, became the comptroller. Allan Paterson, the auditor of the B.C. Sulfite Fibre Company, became the secretary of Whalen Pulp and Paper Mills in 1918.

However, the company faced many challenges, including a 1919 strike by shipping workers in Vancouver.

In 1919, Sir George Bury became the president and chief executive of the company. (He was a former vice president of the Canadian Pacific Railway.) Later, representatives of eastern financial and paper enterprises joined the company’s board.

In July 1920, Sir George Bury resigned as head of the Whalen Company.

There was a recession in the United States in 1920 and 1921, which softened American demand for many types of products, including pulp and paper. As well, there was increasing competition from producers in Scandinavia. The Whalen Pulp Company greatly reduced its production for a time.

By 1922, the company’s outlook was somewhat better, and the mills had resumed operation. Some of their products went to Japan and to other places in Asia.

However, there was another American recession in 1923. A large earthquake in Japan on September 1, 1923, ended sales to Japan. Within a week after the earthquake, the company had stopped its regular operations. George Frederick Gyles (1877-1959) became the company’s receiver and manager.

In December 1923, George Gyles resigned and the court appointed Edward Morgan Mills (1875-1950) as the new receiver.

Eventually the court ordered a sale of assets to pay the some of the debts owing to the company’s bondholders and secured creditors.

In late 1925, a new company, called the British Columbia Pulp and Paper Company, took over the business. Lawrence Killam became the manager. (Mr. Killam later moved into William Whalen’s house at 1696 Laurier Avenue.)

William Mark O’Malley (son of Patricia Geraldine Whalen)

Rev. William O’Malley(01/30/1926 – 09/06/2010); death notice; published in Seattle Spokesman-Review from Sept. 10 to Sept. 11, 2010; http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/spokesman/obituary.aspx?n=william-omalley&pid=145211400: “O’MALLEY, Rev. William Mark, S.J. Born on January 30, 1926 in Vancouver, BC, Rev. William Mark O’Malley, S.J. passed away September 6, 2010 in the Jesuit Infirmary at Gonzaga University. He was 84 years old and a Catholic priest for 48 years. A naturally gifted athlete and avid golfer, Fr. O’Malley was sidelined for the past ten years by two disabling strokes. This decade of suffering was not wasted; his tenacity and grace left visitors and staff uplifted whenever they met and spoke with him and enabled them to see God’s love in their own difficult circumstances. The third child of twelve, Bill was sent in 1943 by his recently widowed mother in 1943 to board at Gonzaga High School. His brother Michael went with him and they were later joined by their brother Kevin. It was at Gonzaga that Bill would discover his vocation to the priesthood- though it would have to wait a few years. He saw action in WWII as a U.S. Army Paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne and attended Gonzaga University for two years prior to entering the Society of Jesus in 1949. As part of his Jesuit training he taught at Gonzaga Prep from 1956 to 1959, and was ordained a priest in 1962 at St. Aloysius Church. The majority of his priestly career was occupied with parish work in Montana, Idaho, and Oregon; he was also active in Marriage Encounter through the retreat center in Portland for several years. Along with his Jesuit family, Fr. O’Malley is survived by one brother (Kevin of Vancouver, BC), and five sisters (Ellen Riley, Geraldine Waters, Maureen O’Brien, and Sharon Williams- all of Vancouver, BC- and Patricia Steiger of Mt. Vernon, WA). He was preceded in death by four brothers (Earl, Michael, Barry and Tim) and one sister (Mary). Their father, Patrick O’Malley, died in 1942; their mother, Patricia Whalen O’Malley, passed away in 1994. The funeral services are: Vigil Service, 7pm, Friday, September 10, and Funeral Mass, 11am, Saturday, September 11. Both will be at the Jesuit House Chapel, Gonzaga University. Inurnment will take place at 2pm, September 11, Mt. St. Michael’s Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Senior Fund, Oregon Province Society of Jesus, or to Hospice of Spokane. Arrangements entrusted to SMART CREMATION, 3401 N. DIVISION, SPOKANE, WA.”
