John Arthur Clark (usually called “Arthur”) was a lawyer, soldier and politician. He lived at 1890 Alberni Street in 1915 and 1916.

Arthur was born on June 8, 1886, in West Flamboro, Ontario. His father was William Clark (1841-1924); his mother was Frances Jane Lawrence (1845-1921).

Arthur went to the University of Toronto, where he earned a B.A. and an LL.B. He was at Osgoode Hall in 1909. He became a member of the British Columbia bar in 1910. From 1911 to 1929, he was a law partner with Robert Scott Lennie (1875-1950).

On June 24, 1914, in Vancouver, Arthur married Katherine Jean Abercrombie Mcgillivray. Jean was born in Vancouver on August 3, 1891. Her father was Donald McGillivray (1857-1900), who was from a pioneering family in British Columbia. Jean’s mother was Sarah Douglas Parker (1860-1935).

During the First World War, Arthur played a leading role as Lieutenant-Colonel of the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada. In 1918, he became Brigadier-General of the Seventh Canadian Infantry Brigade. He became a Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George, and he received the Distinguished Service Order with two bars.

After the war, he returned to his legal practice, and became active in the Canadian Bar Association. Arthur and Katherine leased 1960 Robson Street from Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Drummond during the winter months of 1919 and 1920.

Arthur served as a federal Member of Parliament from 1921 to 1930.

Arthur died in Vancouver in January 18, 1976.

Jean died in Vancouver on February 4, 1986.

John Arthur Clark and Jean Abercrombie Mcgillivray had four children.

Donald McGillivray Clark

Donald McGillivray Clark was born in Vancouver on April 12, 1915. He attended Brentwood College, the University of British Columbia, and the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario. He was called to the bar in British Columbia and became a lawyer in his father’s law firm. On April 25, 1941, in Limpsfield, Surrey, England, he married Joan Napier Ross, who was born on December 15, 1920 in Powell River, British Columbia. He died on March 15, 1993.

Margaret (“Maggie”) Jean McGillivray Clark

Margaret Jean McGillivray Clark was born in 1918 in Torquay, England. On August 3, 1940, she married Allan William Mercer. They were later divorced, and Allan died in Vancouver on September 24, 1972. Maggie later married James (“Jim”) Alexander Coleman, a well-known sportswriter whose father was D’alton Corry Coleman, a chairman and president of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Jim died in Vancouver on January 14, 2001. Maggie died in Vancouver on July 27, 2010.

Dorothy Ruth Clark

Dorothy Ruth Clark was born on October 21, 1920, in Vancouver. On August 8, 1942, in Vancouver, she married John Shrapnel (“Jack”) Maguire, who became a lawyer in Arthur Clark’s law firm. Jack was born on June 29, 1916, in Vancouver, and died on November 18, 1973, in Vancouver. On June 6, 1977, Ruth married Charles William Brazier, who was also a lawyer. Charles was born in Vernon, British Columbia in 1910. He died on November 21, 1993. Dorothy died on April 14, 2007.

John Arthur Clark (“Jock”)

John Arthur Clark was born in Vancouver on March 4, 1922. He was a broker. His first marriage was to Patsy Benton. His second marriage was to Patti Foster in Vancouver on January 15, 1955. He died before 2007.

Many sources give his birthplace as Dundas, Ontario [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dundas,_Ontario], which was a nearby independent town. Since 2001, both Flamboro and Dundas have been part of the city of Hamilton.
