Francis Western, obituary, Vancouver Daily News-Advertiser, July 3, 1903, page 5:

“The death of Mr. Francis Western, which took place yesterday, removed a prominent Canadian Pacific Railway official and an old and esteemed resident of this City. The deceased was local auditor for the Canadian Pacific Railway Company and had resided here for nearly 10 years, prior to which he was in the service of the Railway Company at Rat Portage, Ont. Locally he was known as a prominent member of the I.O.O.F., and was also a sidesman of St. Paul’s Church. His death [came as a result of Bright’s disease], the presence of which was entirely suspected by the deceased till a few weeks ago, when he had occasion to call in a doctor to treat him for la grippe. The disease was then discovered, but the disclosure was made too late to enable the efficacious remedies to be successfully applied and the deceased passed away yesterday in the 44th year of his life. A widow and two children survive to mourn the loss of a kind husband and father. A brother also resides at Fort William, Ont.

The funeral will take place at 3 p.m. to-day, from the residence, 1116 Seaton Street, under the auspices of the I.O.O.F.. The Rev. H.J. Underhill will conduct the private funeral service at the house and the Oddfellows will officiate at the graveside.”

Auditor, took place yesterday afternoon from the family residence on Seaton Street, where the Anglican Church service was conducted by the Rev. H.J. Underhill, Rector of St. Paul’s Church, of which deceased had been a member. At the graveside the service was conducted by the I.O.O.F., which also had charge of the funeral. The pall-bearers were Messrs. J.M. Atkinson, J. Irvin, Monro and J. Carver. Out of respect to the deceased the flags on the C.P.R. steamers were at half-mast yesterday.”
