Charles Wentworth Sarel was born on October 16, 1863, probably in Chelsea, London, England. (Some sources state that his birthplace was in Scotland.) His parents were Thomas Sarel (1831-1878) and Elizabeth Apworth Walker (1833-1896).

Adelaide was born in the United States on May 18, 1865. Her father was Thomas Oliver Larkin.

In the early 1890s, Charles and Adelaide lived in the Yukon and in Alaska. In 1897 they moved to the interior of British Columbia. At first they stayed at Hewitt Bostock’s ranch near Kamloops.

In 1902, Charles became the president and manager of the B.C. Book Company, which sold books, periodicals and stationery.

In 1902, Charles became a member of the local Board of Trade.

In 1908, Charles and Adelaide took their family to Scotland, where Adelaide and the children were planning remain for at least a year. Charles was planning to return to Vancouver.

In 1910, Charles again went to Scotland to join his family.

Charles continued to operate the B.C. Book Company until about 1916. He did not appear in the Vancouver directories after 1916.

Adelaide died in Stettler, Alberta, on May 19, 1948. She was buried in Lake View Cemetery in Stettler.

Charles died in Argyle, Scotland, on December 17, 1950.

On January 20, 1923, in South Vancouver, British Columbia, Emma married John Courtier Keep, who was a farmer. He was born in Windsor, England in 1896. His parents were William Richard Keep and Alice Elizabeth Hagies.

John and Emma later lived in Stettler, Alberta.

John died in 1961, and he was buried in Lake View Cemetery in Stettler.

Emma died in 1974, and she was buried in Lake View Cemetery in Stettler.

He served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War.

He lived in British Columbia for some time after the war.

Hermione Sarel

Hermione Sarel was born in Vancouver on July 17, 1906. (Her full name may have been “Hermione Graham Wentworth Sarel.”)

In 1913 she sailed with her parents from England to Canada, after spending some time in the United Kingdom with her mother.

She died in Vancouver on February 1, 1915. She was buried in North Vancouver Cemetery in North Vancouver, British Columbia.

Educated at Dollar Academy, where he played in the second rugby XV and was Pipe Corporal in the Officer Training Corps. His home address at the time was Marischal Villa, Dollar. He left in 1915. Private 29039 Canadian Infantry 30th Bn. (Seaforth Highlanders). Private Sarel had only been in France for about two months. He is said to have taken part in a struggle for four British guns on the 22nd to 23rd of April, and to have got through the bayonet charge safely, but was hit in the head while assisting the wounded. He was taken to Southmead Hospital, Bristol, and died on 10/05/1915. United Kingdom Bristol (Arnos Vale) Cemetery Screen Wall. 7. 725. Also commemorated at Dollar Episcopal Church; Dollar Academy.
