Another well-known pioneer of Vancouver passed to rest this morning in the person of Mr. Harold Samuel Sherwood, for many years clerk in the office of the registrar at the courthouse. Deceased suffered a stroke a few days ago and passed peacefully away this morning at the family residence on Matthews avenue, Shaughnessy Heights. The late Mr. Sherwood was the son of the late Samuel Sherwood, of Toronto, and was 55 years of age.

After spending several years in the Northwest he came to Vancouver nineteen years ago and for many years was well known an popular in legal circles.

Deceased is survived by wife, four sons, Herchmer, Harold, Kenneth and William, and one daughter, Marjorie. The eldest son, Harold, left for the front last year. In politics, the late Mr. Sherwood was a staunch Conservative.

The late Mr. Sherwood had been associated with the clerical work of Canadian courts for 31 years. He received his first appointment from an Ontario judge. For several years he had filled the position here of supreme court clerk. At perhaps the last 20 courts of assize in Vancouver Mr. Sherwood has called the jury and read the oath. He had come to be looked upon as an integral part of the machinery of law and his hearty salutation will be missed by the members of the judiciary, his brother clerks, the court reporters and the newspaper men, all of whom knew him familiarly as “The Major.”

The funeral, it is announced, will be held on Saturday from the family residence at Shaughnessy Heights.”
