Cooke, Walter Bertram (1876-1915)

Walter Bertram (“Bertram” or “Timmie”) Cooke was a lumberman. He lived at 2020 Beach Avenue in 1908.

He was born in Orillia, Ontario, on January 7, 1876 (or 1877). His father was Walter Cooke (1846-1918). His mother was Virginia Caledonia Taylor (about 1851-1900).

Bertram arrived in British Columbia in 1899, where he worked as an accountant with William Lamont Tait (1846-1919), a successful lumberman who had lived in the Orillia area for a time before moving to British Columbia. In 1901, Bertram and Walter’s son, Edward Rogers Tait (1873-1973), formed a firm called Cooke & Tait, which manufactured lumber and cedar shingles.

By 1907, Bertram had established the Terminal Lumber and Shingle Company.

In 1908, he was living at 2020 Beach Avenue, along with his father and his brother, Lisgar Douglas Cooke (1871-1939).

On December 21, 1910, in Vancouver, Bertram married Helen Dunville Smith. She was born on June 29, 1883 (or 1884) in Quebec. Her father was Thomas Smith (1841-1920). Her mother was Georgina Dunville (1844-1925).

The Orillia Packet, April 8, 1915- “MR. W. B. COOKE- Word came on Tuesday from Mrs. E. F. Cooke, who is now visiting her friends at Vancouver, that her nephew, Mr. W. B. Cooke, second son of Mr. Walter Cooke, had died of pneumonia. A few days before relatives here had been informed of his illness, but the news of his death was a shock nevertheless. Mr. Cooke was a native of Orillia, his mother having been a daughter of the late J. D. Taylor, and a sister of Mrs. T. A. Main. “Teddy” was for years a familiar figure in the store of his uncle, Mr. H. Cooke, where he filled the post of book-keeper, and was much liked. About 15 years ago he went to Vancouver, and not long after he went into the shingle and lumber business with a son of Wm. Tait, also formerly of Orillia. This partnership was succeeded by the Terminal Lumber Co., of which Mr. Cooke became President and Managing Director. Its business was large and widely extended, and later changed to W. B. Cooke & Co., which is the present name and style. Associated in the business with him for some time have been his father, Mr. Walter Cooke, and his brother, Mr. Lisgar D. Cooke. Deceased was married about four years ago, and leaves a widow but no children. Last year Mr. Cooke built a fine residence on Shaughnessy Heights, the finest residential part of the city. He was a shrewd, industrious, enterprising businessman, who made many friends, and his death will be much regretted.” [Reproduced in Walter Bertram Cooke, Family of Gwen David Cunningham & Dale Cunningham – Person Sheet, http://www.gwennyalogy.org/ps36/ps36_220.htm.]
