Putnam, Hugh Lawrence (1883-1983)

Hugh Lawrence Putnam was an assistant engineer. He apparently lived at 1974 Georgia Street for some time before 1909 (although he did not appear in the Vancouver directories from 1900 to 1909). He appeared on the list of objections to voters in the 1909 Revision of Register of Voters: Vancouver Province, April 10, 1909, page 22.

Hugh Lawrence Putnam was born on August 26, 1883, in Masstown, in Colchester County, near Truro, Nova Scotia. His father was Arthur Putnam (1860-1946). Hugh’s mother was Elizabeth Lightbody (1865-1934).

In 1891 and 1901 Hugh was living with his parents in Colchester County.

On October 5, 1909, in Victoria, British Columbia, Hugh married Winnifred May Gildersleeve. She was born about 1889 in Medical Lake, Washington. Her parents were Schofield and Loveland Gildersleeve.

In 1910, Hugh and Winnifred were living in Tacoma, Washington. Hugh was a locomotive engineer.

In 1917, Hugh was driving a car that killed a pedestrian Portland. He was charged with involuntary manslaughter. (The outcome of the manslaughter charge is not available.)

By 1920, Hugh was married to Cecile Olive Winters. She was born in 1898 in Chehalem Station, Oregon. Her father was John Wesley Winters (1859-1931). Cecile’s mother was Susan Isabelle Clear (1866-1950).

Hugh and Cecile lived in Oregon through the 1930s and 1940s.

Cecile died in San Francisco, California, on November 30, 1970.

Hugh died in Orange County, California on March 19, 1983.

Hugh and Cecile had the following children.

Laurence D. Putnam

Laurence L. Putnam was born in Portland, Oregon, on April 5, 1919. (In some sources he is Laurence L. Putnam.)

Laurence lived with his parents in Portland from 1920 to 1940.

It appears that he served with the United States military during the Second World War, including time as a lieutenant flying in China and India, and that he died in California on April 29, 1999.

Allen Lewis Putnam

Allen Lewis Putnam was born in Oregon about 1922.

He registered with the United States army during the Second World War.

It appears that he married Martha Louise Goodwin. She was born in China in 1922. Her father was Willard Terry Goodwin (1893-1953), who was vice president of American President Lines.

In January 1977, Allen and Martha were divorced in California. Martha appears to have died on May 2, 2012. She was buried in Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego, California.

On March 14, 1979, in Carson City, Nevada, Allen married Bette Keeley. It appears that they were divorced in 1994.

Allen died in on June 12, 2004.
