Verner’s Time With T.B. Cuthbertson and Company

Verner first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1916. He was living at 1929 Beach Avenue, and was a salesman for T.B. Cuthbertson and Company, a men’s clothing store.

The Cuthbertson business had been in Vancouver since the early 1900s.

Thomas Bell Cuthbertson was born in Ontario, probably on May 14, 1868. He was married to Tina May Clark. By 1898, he was a clerk in Joseph Sheasgreen’s clothing store on Hastings Street. Shortly afterward, Mr. Cuthbertson took over the business. The company was quite successful, and eventually there were two new branches in Vancouver and one in Victoria. However, Thomas’s health was not good, and he went to California to recuperate. He died in California on February 3, 1913.

Harry Gagen, who lived at 1872 Pendrell Street from 1917 to 1919, was a managing director of Cuthbertson’s through the mid-1920s. The business was still operating until 1928 at least.

Warshal’s Sporting Goods Records, 1918-1995, Archives West, http://archiveswest.orbiscascade.org/ark:/80444/xv77647: “Adolph and William Warshal opened a pawn shop in downtown Seattle in 1922. In 1936 it moved to First and Madison and expanded into sporting goods, which became its primary business during the decades it remained at that location. Two branch stores were opened in the 1950s and 1960s, one in Ravenna and one near Northgate, but both eventually closed. However, the main store continued to thrive and became a downtown landmark with a loyal customer base buying hunting and fishing gear, cameras, and camping and sports equipment. Many employees worked at the store for decades. Adolph’s son Jerry began working at the store at the age of 12 and eventually took over the business. In 1997 he sold the building to developers who planned to build a hotel and condominiums on the site, and the store closed in 2001.
