Herbert Norman Boultbee was a salesman for various businesses that sold building supplies and automobiles and automotive parts. He lived at 980 Denman Street from 1916 to 1919.

Herbert was born in Vancouver on August 20, 1887, the seventh of ten children. His father was John Boultbee, who was born in Ancaster, Ontario, about 1850. John was a lawyer, who became the first police magistrate in Vancouver.

John Boultbee moved with his family to Rossland, British Columbia about 1897. He died in Rossland on August 23, 1906, and was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Herbert’s mother was Elizabeth (“Lizzie”) Hampton. She was born about 1853, in Toronto, Ontario. She died on December 27, 1903, in Rossland; she was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Herbert went to school in Vancouver. He then worked in the Imperial Bank of Canada for six years. IN 1905, he left the bank and went to work for C. Gardner Johnson & Company, which was a ship broker and general agent. In April 1913, Herbert became the managing director of the Boultbee-Johnson Company.

On June 4, 1913, in Vancouver, Herbert married Nina Jessie Francis. She was born in Chicago, Illinois, about 1887. Her father was George F. Francis; her mother was Clara Comfort (or Comfert).

During the First World War, Herbert served with the British Imperial Army. After the war, he returned to Vancouver, where he continued in the automotive business.

Herbert and Nina lived in Vancouver until at least until the 1950s, after which they retired to Langley, British Columbia.

Herbert died on February 26, 1978 in Murrayville, near Langley.

Nina died in Langley on December 28, 1984.

Herbert and Nina had one daughter.

Joan Evelyn Boultbee

Joan Evelyn Boultbee was born on May 11, 1925. It appears that Herbert and Nina adopted Joan.

In June 1944, in Vancouver, Joan married Frank Sommers. In 1945, Frank and Joan were living with Herbert and Nina. Frank worked as an electrician at Herbert’s company.

Frank and Joan had a baby boy who was born on March 16, 1945 in Vancouver; he died on March 18, and was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

By 1946, Frank was listed as being on active service. Joan was living with Herbert and Nina.

In 1947, Joan was still living with Herbert and Nina, but she was listed under the surname Boultbee. There was no listing for Frank Sommers.

By 1948, Joan was married to Robert E. Caverly; they were living in an apartment at 1507 West 12th Avenue. Robert was a ridge inspector for the Municipality of West Vancouver.

Joan later married Jack Sefton Marshall. He was born in London, England on November 2, 1906. His father was Albert George Marshall; his mother was Emma Meeker Coombes.

Jack died in Langley, British Columbia, on October 11, 1982.

Joan died in Langley on March 18, 1986.
