“W.H. Wilson, early postal worker, dies,” Vancouver Province, January 7, 1956, page41 [includes photograph of William H. Wilson]:

“One of Vancouver’s early postal employees died Thursday after a long illness.

William Hugh Wilson, 81, of 1845 West Fourteenth, was born in Ontario and came to Vancouver in 1890. He was the father of Vancouver’s present postmaster.

He joined the Post Office in 1898 when there were only five members comprising the entire staff, and he saw it grow to more than 600 in number during his 42 years service.

He was one of the postal employees who handled the first shipment of gold from the Klondike—one ton of the yellow metal.

He could recall when four men handled all the city’s mail deliveries, and when all persons living south of Robson had to come “into town” to collect their own mail at the Post Office.

Mr. Wilson was connected primarily with despatching mail from Vancouver to foreign and domestic addresses.

He retired in 1940 as assistant superintendent of mails.

His son, William Hugh, became Vancouver’s postmaster.

Mr. Wilson is survived by his wife, Viola; four sons, Gordon, William H., David and Kenneth; four daughters, Mrs. Samuel Chadwick, Mrs. Godfrey Bahr, Mrs. Joseph Swanson, and Mrs. George Stenning, all of Vancouver; and two step-sons, Capt. Calvin Green and Capt. Vernon Green, of Victoria.

Rev. J.G. Gorwill conducted funeral services at Mount Pleasant Funeral Chapel, today. Burial was in Mountain View cemetery.”
