Harry Hercules Rowley was born on September 25, 1865. Many sources say that he was born in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia; others give his birthplace as Lansingburgh, New York.
Harry’s parents were Lieutenant-Colonel John William Horsley Rowley (1819-1896) and Miriam Walsh (1835-1913).
John William Horsley Rowley was a banker in eastern Canada.
John Rowley’s first wife was Anne Norman Farish (1819–1857). Anne died in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, in 1857.
According to the birth registration for John’s son, Charles Walsh Rowley, John married Miriam Walsh in New York State on November 13, 1862.
In 1896, John travelled to England. While he was there, he became ill. He died on October 24, 1896 at 20 Dents Road, Wandsworth Common in London.
Miriam Rowley later lived at 36 Second Avenue in Ottawa, Ontario.
Miriam died in Ottawa on January 13, 1913.
Harry Rowley: Early Life
In 1871, Harry was living with his parents in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.
In 1881, he was a student in Ottawa, Ontario.
In 1887, he was a militia member, serving as a second lieutenant in the 41st Regiment, Brockville Rifles.
In the 1880s, he became an employee of the Bank of Ottawa. In December 1887, he received notice that he was getting a promotion.
In 1889, he was a clerk with the Bank of Ottawa.
To Winnipeg
By 1891, Harry was a teller with the Bank of British North America in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Marriage to Mary Denmark
On July 11, 1894, in Belleville, Ontario, Harry married Mary Rowed Denmark. She was born in Belleville on November 27, 1868. Her parents were George Denmark (1842–1909) and Margaret Ann Matthie (1844–1936).
George Denmark was a lawyer and alderman in Belleville. He lived at 2 Alexander Street, which still stands at the corner of Alexander Street and John Street.
George Denmark died in Montreal, Quebec on August 5, 1909.
Margaret Ann Denmark died in Victoria, British Columbia on August 2, 1936.
To Vancouver
In April 1896, Harry resigned his commission as captain in the Nineteenth Winnipeg battalion.
Later in 1896, Harry was in Vancouver, where he was an employee of the Bank of British North America.
The bank’s offices were at 501 West Hastings Street, which was at the northwest corner of Hastings Street and Richards Street.
For a short time, Harry and Mary stayed at the Manor House (later called the Badminton Hotel).
In 1897, they lived at 1044 Pender Street. In 1898 and 1899 they were at 1400 Pender Street.
To Victoria, British Columbia
In February 1899, the bank promoted Harry to work as an accountant in Victoria, British Columbia.
Harry and Mary lived briefly at a Roccabella, which was a residential boarding house in Victoria.
From 1900 to 1903, they were at 222 View Street in Victoria.
To Rossland
In 1904, Harry became the manager of the Bank of British North America’s branch in Rossland, British Columbia.
To Brantford
In October 1909, the bank transferred Harry to manage its branch in Brantford, Ontario.
To Ottawa: Union Bank
In 1911, Harry moved to Ottawa, Ontario, where he became the manager of the Union Bank’s main branch on Wellington Street.
At first, Harry and Mary lived with Harry’s brother, William, at 140 Bay Street.
In May 1911, Harry and Mary moved to 246 Gilmour Street.
Return to Vancouver
In January 1914, the Union Bank announced that it was transferring Harry to become the manager of the bank’s main branch in Vancouver.
It appears that Harry at first went to Vancouver by himself, since he and Mary moved to Vancouver in April 1914.
At first they stayed at Glencoe Lodge in Vancouver.
In June 1914, they moved from Glencoe Lodge to 821 Broughton Street.
To Victoria
In the fall of 1915, the Union Bank transferred Harry to Victoria, British Columbia.
Harry and Mary lived at 1069 Joan Crescent in Victoria.
Harry died in Victoria on June 27, 1923.
Mary continued to live in Victoria until the 1950s. She died in Victoria on December 29, 1954.
Harry and Mary did not have children.

William Horsley Rowley
William Horsley Rowley was born in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia on March 21, 1851. His parents were Lieutenant-Colonel John William Horsley Rowley (1819-1896) and Anne Norman Farish (1819–1857).
He was a banker and a business executive with the E.B. Eddy Company of Hull, Quebec.
On January 20, 1876, he married Terese Anne Grace Richardson. She was born in Ontario in 1850. She died in Ottawa, Ontario on March 8, 1906.
On October 25, 1911, William married Eliza Wildman Ritchie. She was the youngest daughter of Sir William Johnstone Ritchie (1813-1892), the chief justice of the Supreme Court of Canada from 1879-1892.
In 1912, the Rowleys moved to Stadacona Hall at 395 Laurier Avenue East. The house had been the residence of several prominent Canadians, including Joseph Edouard Cauchon, Sir John A. MacDonald, John A. Cameron, and Sir Frederick Borden.
William died in Toronto, Ontario on January 12, 1915.
William left an estate of almost $700,000, which was a vast sum at that time.
Elsie Rowley died in Ottawa on March 24, 1963.

Arthur Horsley Rowley
Arthur Horsley Rowley was born in Ottawa, Ontario on November 18, 1876.
Arthur was a student at Ashbury House School in Ottawa.
Later he studied at Bishop’s College in Lennoxville, Quebec.
In June 1895, Arthur travelled to Europe with his parents and his aunt, Mabel Richardson.
William Rowley returned to Canada in August 1895.
Mrs. Rowley, Mabel Richardson, and Arthur Rowley returned in October 1895.
Arthur worked for about a year and a half in the offices of the E.B. Eddy Company. He later became an insurance and real estate broker.
In 1901 he developed appendicitis, and he had an operation at St. Luke’s Hospital in Ottawa.
In mid-December, the news reports suggested that Arthur’s condition was improving.
He appeared well enough to go home briefly, but he had to return to the hospital for a second operation. His condition did not improve, and he died in the hospital on January 10, 1902.
Arthur was buried at Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa.
Arthur’s father, William, became the administrator of Arthur’s estate, which consisted of a $9,000 life insurance policy.
John William Horsley Rowley
John William Horsley Rowley was born in Ottawa on December 2, 1912.
In 1940, John married Audrey Fellowes.
In 1945, John was killed in action while serving with the Allied forces during the Second World War.
In 1946, Audrey married Malcolm John MacDonald, who was the governor-general of Malaya. He was born on August 17 1901, in Lossiemouth, Scotland. His father was James Ramsay MacDonald (1866-1937), the prime minister of the United Kingdom during parts of the 1920s and 1930s.
Malcolm died in England on January 11, 1981.
Audrey died in Ottawa on May 9, 2015.
Roger Rowley
Roger Rowley was born in Ottawa on June 12, 1914.
He had a long and distinguished military career.
On June 15, 1937, in Ottawa, he married Joan Edith Graves.
This marriage appears to have ended in divorce.
On April 23, 1964, Roger married Barbara Stephenson (née Mitchell).
On February 18, 1967, Joan married John Richard Hale Ley.
Joan died in North Saanich, British Columbia on February 7, 1979.
Roger died on February 14, 2007.
Barbara died on February 18, 2012.
Owsley Robert Rowley
Owsley Robert Rowley was born in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia on January 12, 1868. His parents were Lieutenant-Colonel John William Horsley Rowley (1819-1896) and Miriam Walsh (1835-1913). He went to school at the Yarmouth High School and the Yarmouth Academy.
In 1885, he began working at the Bank of Yarmouth. Later he was with the Merchants Bank of Canada in Brampton, Toronto, Ottawa and Chatham, Ontario.
He then joined the Bank of British North America, where he was an accountant, inspector of branch returns and the chief inspector.
On June 7, 1905, in Ottawa, Ontario, he married Mabel Treacher Richardson. She was born in Windsor, Ontario February 17, 1869. Her parents were David Johnstone Richardson (1816–1885) and Sarah Mercer (1823–1881).
In 1915, he briefly visited Vancouver.
In 1916, he became the superintendent of the bank’s eastern branches.
When the Bank of British North America amalgamated with the Bank of Montreal in 1918, he became the inspector of the Bank of Montreal until he retired in 1932.
He was an active lay member of the Anglican Church, and he was a member of several Canadian military regiments.
He belonged to the Hunt Club in Toronto. He played cricket and golf.
In the late 1940s, Owsley and Mabel lived at the Alexandra Palace apartments in Toronto
Owsley died on November 24, 1949. He was a passenger in a car that skidded off the road and hit a tree.
In 1950, Mabel moved to live with her daughter in St. Catharines, Ontario.
Mable died at St. Catharines on September 1, 1951.
Owsley and Mabel had a daughter, Grace Richardson Rowley. She was born in Quebec on July 21, 1906.
On May 8, 1942, in Toronto, Grace became engaged to Robert McDonnell Thomson. He was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on December 19, 1914. His parents were Robert McDonnell Thomson (1869-1916) and Janet Catherine Taylor (1873–1956).
Robert’s father (also named Robert McDonnell Thomson) was killed during the First World War.
Janet Thomson died in Vancouver on March 9, 1956.
Robert studied drama at the University of British Columbia and at Columbia University in New York.
Grace’s and Robert’s wedding was on May 8, 1942.
In 1945, Robert and Grace moved to Montreal, Quebec.
Grace died in St. Catharines, Ontario on November 24, 1958.
Robert died in Toronto on August 7, 2000.
Charles Walsh Rowley
Charles Walsh Rowley was born on September 30, 1869 at Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. His parents were Lieutenant-Colonel John William Horsley Rowley (1819-1896) and Miriam Walsh (1835-1913).
In 1887 he began working with the Canadian Bank of Commerce, and he remained with the bank until the 1920s.
On September 30, 1896, in London, Ontario, Charles married Fannie Woodman Smith. She was born in London on May 5, 1876. Her parents were Henry Arvida Smith (1827-1888) and Lamaria Jane Hinckley (1827-1890).
In 1910, Charles was the manager of the bank’s branch in Calgary, Alberta. He and Fannie visited Vancouver, and they stayed at Glencoe Lodge.
By 1925, Charles was the assistant general manager of the bank. He retired from the bank in 1929.
Fannie died in Toronto on August 7, 1932.
Charles died in Toronto on June 24, 1944.

Miriam Hinckley Rowley
Miriam Hinckley Rowley was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on April 7, 1900.
On May 27, 1933, in Toronto, Ontario, she married Geoffrey Stephen How Carter. He was born in1898 in Shipley, Yorkshire, England. His parents were William Joseph Carter and Lucy How.
Geoffrey died on November 27, 1966.
Miriam died on December 6, 1991.
Kate Stirling Rowley
Kate Stirling Rowley was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on March 30, 1902.
In 1924, Kate became engaged to marry Vernal William Bradburn. He was born in Vancouver on October 4, 1899. His parents were Halbertram Hector Bradburn and Sarah Scaman Winch.
The wedding was on June 14, 1924, at St. Luke’s Church in Winnipeg.
In March1927, Vernal and Kate were preparing to move from Winnipeg to Toronto.
Their new home in Toronto was 2 Ancroft Place, in a new complex of high-end rental townhouses near the northwest corner of Sherbourne Street and Bloor Street.
On July 13, 1927, Vernal was killed in a car accident near Lorne Park, Mississauga, Ontario.
He was buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Winnipeg.
On October 9, 1929, in Toronto, Kate married John Murray Rutherford. He was born in Marmora, Hastings, Ontario on April 23, 1899. His parents were Robert Percival Rutherford and Edith Arnildi McFarlane.
John died in Toronto on April 27, 1949.
Kate died in Toronto on January 24, 1956.
Helen Braine Rowley
Helen Braine Rowley was born in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia on December 28, 1872.
She did not marry.
She died in Toronto, Ontario on February 12, 1950, and she was buried in Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa.

Union Bank of Canada
The main Vancouver branch of the Union Bank of Canada was at 550 West Hastings Street, at the southeast corner of Hastings Street and Seymour Street. In 1919 the bank moved to temporary offices at 450 West Hastings Street. The building at the corner of Hastings and Seymour was demolished in 1919, and a new “temple” style building appeared on the site.
The Union Bank of Canada began in Quebec City in 1865 as the Union Bank of Lower Canada. In 1886 it changed its name to the Union Bank of Canada. In 1925, the Union Bank merged with the Royal Bank of Canada.
