Aileen Aivazoff

About 1944, Aileen Aivazoff moved into 1050 Chilco Street, where Aileen’s mother, Myrtle Allan, was the apartment proprietor.

Aileen was born Louzetta Aileen Emerson (or Aileen Louzetta Emerson) on November 5, 1892 (or 1893) at Douglas Island, Alaska. Her parents were Nelson Ellsworth Emerson (1864–1955) and Myrtle Estelle Hebner (1869–1945). After Myrtle married William Andrew Allan in 1902, Aileen became known as Aileen Allan.

William Allan died in 1924.

Vancouver Sun, November 3, 1924, page 2, column 5 [street address was actually 1100 Gilford Street].

Myrtle Allan died in 1945.

Vancouver Sun, June 11, 1945, page 18, column 1.

Vancouver Sun, June 12, 1945, page 15, column 2. [Note: listed address is “1050 Charles Street” instead of “1050 Chilco Street.”]

Aileen was a talented soprano singer. In 1912, her mother took her to Paris, France, to study with the Belgian baritone, Jacques Bouhy (1848-1929).

Vancouver Province, July 25, 1912, page 8, column 3.

Aileen later performed frequently at musical events in Vancouver.

In 1917, Aileen became engaged to Misak Yremavitch Aivasoff, a Russian-Armenian contractor and businessman who was living in Prince Rupert, British Columbia.

Vancouver Sun, September 15, 1917, page 3, column 3.

The wedding was in Seattle, Washington, on September 15, 1917.

It appears that Misak used “Albert” as his surname for a short time while he was in Prince Rupert. A 1918 birth announcement referred to Aileen as “Mrs. M. Albert.”

Vancouver Sun, June 6, 1918, page 5, column 3.

In 1920 and 1921, the Aivazoffs were living at 1108 Nicola Street in Vancouver. Misak was the president of Aivazoff and Penklo Limited, which was a firm of manufacturers agents. (1108 Nicola Street appears to be on the far left in the postcard image below.)

In the fall of 1921, the Aivazoffs were building “Villa Russe,” a large Mediterranean-style house at 3390 The Crescent in Shaughnessy Heights.

Villa Russe was famous for its lavish decorations and for the frequent social events that took place there.

The house still exists, although it has had several additions and renovations over the years.
