William Elijah Flumerfelt was a shoe store manager, secretary of the Vancouver Tourist Association, and real estate broker. He lived at 1905 Beach Avenue in 1906.

He was born in Markham, Ontario, on October 27, 1860 (although some sources say 1858). His father was George Flumerfelt (1820-1866). His mother was Cynthia Amelia Barnes (1825-1874).

After he finished his schooling in Markham, he moved to Manitoba.

In 1881, he was in Rockwood, Manitoba, working as a clerk.

In 1884, he married Phoebe Flint Ross. She was born on April 18, 1863 in Belleville, Ontario. Her father was James Ross (1821-1903). Her mother was Isabel Caroline Ketcheson (1826-1886).

From 1886 to 1895, William worked in the boot and shoe business in Brandon, and Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, although the 1891 Canada census said that he was an insurance agent in Brandon.

He arrived in Vancouver in 1895. He was a clerk for the Ames Holden Company, a boot and shoe manufacturer that was based in Montreal.

(For a time, William’s brother, Alfred Cornelius Flumerfelt (1856-1930), was a director of the Ames Holden Company. The company later merged with James McCready and Company to become Ames Holden McCready: “James McCready & Co. – Boot & Shoe Mfrs,” Montreal Times, October 19, 2013, http://mtltimes.ca/social-life/james-mccready-co-boot-shoe-mfrs/.; 125 West Pender Street, Changing Vancouver, https://changingvancouver.wordpress.com/tag/ames-holden-mcready/; Herbert Ames, Wikipedia article, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herbert_Ames.)

In 1897, William became the manager of the Patterson Shoe Company’s branch in Nanaimo, British Columbia. (His brother, Alfred, was also a director of the Patterson Shoe Company.). He stayed in Nanaimo until about 1901, and then returned to Vancouver, where he was the manager of the Patterson Shoe Company’s business until 1904.

He moved often. This is a selected list of his addresses in Vancouver.

In 1905, he was the secretary of the Vancouver Tourist Association.

Henderson’s City of Vancouver Directory, 1905, page 462
Henderson’s City of Vancouver Directory, 1905, page 462

In 1908, he worked briefly for the Dominion Publishing Association, and then entered a business with John Roy Paton (1864 or 1868-1950), a dentist who was also interested in real estate.

In 1908, he became a member of the Vancouver school board. In 1909, he was chairman of the school board’s finance committee. In 1910, he was the general chairman of the school board.

In his private life, he belonged to the A.F. & A.M. (Ancient Free and Accepted Masons), and the I.O.O.F. (Independent Order of Odd Fellows). He played lacrosse and baseball.

He tried twice to enrol in the military forces during the First World War. In August 1916, he signed an attestation paper to participate in the Canadian Expeditionary Force, giving his birth date as October 1872. It appears that he served briefly in Montreal, but he returned to Vancouver shortly afterward. In February 1919, he signed another attestation paper. This time, he gave his birth date as October 27, 1863. He also indicated that he had been discharged from the military forces for being over age.

In the early 1920s, he worked as a clerk in the government liquor store.

He died in Vancouver on October 2, 1925. He was buried in Ocean View Cemetery in Burnaby, British Columbia.

William did not leave a will. His son, Herbert, became the administrator of the estate, which did not include any real property. There was only a small amount of life insurance and cash, totalling $425, which went to Herbert.

Phoebe lived in Vancouver until about 1933. By 1940, she was living with her son, Alfred, in Chemult, Klamath County, Oregon.

Phoebe died in Coos, Oregon, in 1946.

William and Phoebe had the following children.

Alfred Ross Flumerfelt

Alfred Ross Flumerfelt was born in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba on January 23, 1885.

In 1911, he was working as a painter.

On June 22, 1912, in Vancouver, he married Helen Madeline Kirk Campbell. She was born about 1890 in Brooklyn, New York. Her father was Hugh Campbell. Her mother was Lillie Kirk Hughes. Alfred described his occupation as “rancher.”

By October 1915, when Alfred enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force, his occupation was “surveyor.”

While he served with the military forces in Europe, he was wounded and suffered from shell shock. He went to a base hospital in northern France. It appears that he returned to Canada in May 1919.

By 1940, he was divorced, and was living in in Chemult, Klamath County, Oregon.

He died in Coos, Oregon, on July 15, 1947.

Helen Louise Flumerfelt

Helen Louise Flumerfelt was born in Brandon, Manitoba, on May 8, 1886.

She was married twice. Her first husband was William Herbert Gasconie Horn, who was born in London, England about 1881. He appears to have been a “traveller” or an engineer. His father was William James Horn. His mother was M.A. Gasconie. (The British Columbia marriage registration database has two certificates for this marriage. The first certificate says that the marriage occurred on December 14, 1905. The second certificate gave the marriage date as July 7, 1906. The Victoria Times had a short marriage notice that referred to July 7, 1906.)

On January 11, 1919, in Vancouver, married John Scott, who was born in Belfast, Ireland about 1879. His occupation was “manager.” The marriage certificate gave Helen’s name as Langhorne.

By 1921, John and Helen were living in number 604 of Washington Court, at 998 Thurlow Street. John was the district manager of the Dunlop Tire and Rubber Goods Company.

No further information is available for Helen at this time.

William Ross (Roscoe) Flumerfelt

William Ross Flumerfelt was born in Brandon, Manitoba, on March 31, 1889.

He worked as a district supervisor of forestry in Powell River, British Columbia. On February 21, 1920, in New Westminster, British Columbia, he married Eunice Dorothy Brice, who was a teacher. She was born in Onalaska, La Crosse County, Wisconsin., on January 23, 1897. Her father was Harvey C. Brice, who was a civil engineer. Her mother was Anna Renner.

William later worked as the manager of a boom chain transportation company. He died in Vancouver on April 21, 1944. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Eunice died in Vancouver on March 12, 1986.

Herbert Douglas Flumerfelt

Herbert Douglas Flumerfelt was born in Estevan, Saskatchewan, on March 17, 1894. (He was sometimes called “Douglas.”)

He worked as a clerk and storekeeper.

During the First World War, he enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He served with the machine gun section of the 72nd Seaforth Highlanders.

In 1923, he was working as a storekeeper in Bella Bella, British Columbia.

On November 2, 1923, in West Vancouver, British Columbia, he married Noreen Elsie Mckittrick. She was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on July 28, 1895. Her father was Henry McKittrick. Her mother was Catherine McKay.

Herbert continued to work in the logging business.

Noreen died in Vancouver on October 15, 1965.

Herbert later married Georgina Russell Kerr. She was born in Vancouver on November 29, 1899. Her father was John Kerr. Her mother was Annie Isabella Allardyce.

Herbert died in Vancouver on February 24,1972.

Georgina died in Vancouver on March 19, 1984.
