Thomas Clouston Rae was a realtor. He lived at 1856 Barclay Street in 1906.

 

Early Life

Thomas Clouston Rae was born in Stromness, Orkney, Scotland, on July 4, 1853. His parents were John Thomas Rae and Janet Clouston.

 

To Canada

In 1869, Thomas moved to Canada to work for the Hudson’s Bay Company. He began his career at the Hudson’s Bay Company’s post at Moose Factory, where his uncle, Dr. John Rae, was the medical officer.

Thomas later worked for the Hudson’s Bay Company in a variety of locations across northern and western Canada.

 

Marriage to Jean McNaughton

On January 10, 1893, in Sudbury, Ontario, Thomas married Jean McNaughton. She was born in Newcastle on August 12, 1868. Her parents were Andrew McNaughton and Elizabeth Henderson.

In 1901 Thomas and Jean were living in Calgary, Northwest Territories (later Alberta). Thomas was the factor for the Hudson’s Bay Company.

 

Marriage to Charlotte Smiley

It appears that Jean died shortly after 1901. Sometime between 1901 and 1904, Thomas married Charlotte Erema Smiley. She was born in Vaughan Township, Ontario, on January 15, 1877. Her parents were John Smiley (1840-1896) and Charlotte Elizabeth Burrage (1846-1919).

In 1905, Thomas was a witness at one of the signing sessions for the James Bay Treaty (Treaty Number 9) in northern Ontario.

To Vancouver

Thomas appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1906. He was living at 1856 Barclay Street and he was working as a realtor.

In 1911, the Rae family was living on Galiano Island. Thomas was working as a merchant. They later moved to North Vancouver, where Thomas became involved in civic politics. In 1921 he was living at 3305 Mahon Avenue in North Vancouver.

Thomas died in Vancouver on January 28, 1939.

Charlotte died in Chilliwack, British Columbia, on March 7, 1971.

Douglas Henderson Rae was born on August 9, 1895, in Newcastle, Durham County, Ontario.

He became a student at the British Columbia campus of McGill University.

On January 21, 1915, he signed his attestation papers to serve with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War.

He later returned to his studies at the University of British Columbia. After he graduated, he worked as a mining engineer.

On December 21, 1926, in Spokane, Washington, Douglas married Myrtle Marguerite McCaslin, who had been a school teacher in Cranbrook, British Columbia. She was born in Salmo, British Columbia, on August 31, 1903. Her parents were Hugo Francis (or Frank) McCaslin (1866-1923) and Matilda Nilsson (1873-1967).

Douglas died in Vancouver on January 7, 1987.

 

Wilfred Spence Rae

Wilfred Spence Rae was born on September 24, 1897.

On October 25, 1915, in North Vancouver, British Columbia, he enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force to serve during the First World War.

On May 4, 1935, in Victoria, British Columbia, he married Charlotte Irene Graham.

In 1956 Wilfred became a naturalized United States citizen.

Wilfred died in Orange County, California, on October 28, 1984.

Charlotte died in Orange County, California, on November 1, 1990.

 

Erema (Remy) Charlotte Rae

Erema (Remy) Charlotte Rae was born in Chapleau, Algoma County, Ontario, on April 10, 1899.

She married Earl Frederick Seat, who was born in Winnfield, Louisiana, on September 9, 1907.

Remy died in Los Angeles County, California, on October 9, 1978.

Earl died in Broward County, Florida, on April 23, 1979.

 

Thomas and Charlotte had the following children.

 

Zoe Margaret Rae

Zoe Margaret Rae was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on August 24, 1904. (The Manitoba birth registry gave her name as “Lee Margaret Rae.”)

On June 29, 1928, in North Vancouver, British Columbia, she married Kenneth Burnett Woodward.

She died in New Westminster, British Columbia, on July 12, 1948.

Kenneth died in Nanaimo, British Columbia, on April 19, 1968.

 

Charlotte Clouston Rae

Charlotte Clouston Rae was born in Victoria, British Columbia, on August 6, 1907.

She did not marry.

She died in North Vancouver, British Columbia, on March 25, 1931.

 

Kathleen Erema Rae

Kathleen Erema Rae was born on Galiano Island, British Columbia, on May 7, 1909.

She worked as a hair dresser.

She married Michael Hunt.

Kathleen died in Maple Ridge, British Columbia, on November 20, 1994.

 

Ethel Rae

Ethel Rae was born in British Columbia about 1912.

She married Mr. Edwards.

In 1994 she was living in Maple Ridge, British Columbia.

 

Arthur Clouston Rae

Arthur Clouston Rae was born in North Vancouver, British Columbia, on September 5, 1918.

He married Joy Robinson.

Joy died in Ottawa on January 26, 2009.

Arthur died in Ottawa, Ontario, on January 21, 2015.

Smiley, Toronto, 9 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Rae was an Honorary Life Member of the Canadian Home Economics Association, Past President of the Provincial Parent-Teachers association and during her life-time was an active member in the Red Cross, Hard of Hearing League, 2nd Mile Club and Knox United Church W.A. Born in Vancouver in 1918, he enjoyed a long and eventful life full of challenges, as a Vice President of Sales for Atlas Steels Company (Canada); and for Cincinnati Shaper (US) in East Kilbride, Scotland and then in Cincinnati. His greatest pleasure was being with his wife and family, followed closely by hunting and fishing adventures with friends and relations. A private memorial service will be held in Ottawa followed by a private interment ceremony in St. Catharines, Ontario in the spring. The family thanks the staff of Peter D.
