John Dyke’s Early Life

John was living with his parents in 1851 and 1871.

By 1871 he was lodging with Elizabeth Sepscombe in Bray, Berkshire. He was a brewer’s clerk.

In 1879, in Ely, Campbridgeshire, John married Martha Mather. She was born in about 1854. Her father was John Mather. Her mother was Sarah Robinson.

For a time, John was in Dublin, Ireland, where his efforts at running his own brewery were unsuccessful. He later travelled to Canada, where he spent some time in Manitoba. Later he went to farm in Port Haney, British Columbia. For much of this time he apparently left some family members back in England with relatives.

John Dyke first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1898. He was living on Chilco Street, and he was working as a brewer.

Henderson’s BC Gazetteer and Directory, 1898, page 548.

John was the brew master at Stanley Park Brewing. Frank Foubert had established the Stanley Park Brewery in a former house at 725 Chilco Street. (The brewery was not technically within the boundaries of Stanley Park, but it was on the east shore of Lost Lagoon, which is nearby.) Frank and his wife later leased the property to others.
