John Dawson McGregor was a shoemaker. He lived in a series of houses in the 1900 block of Beach Avenue from 1904 to 1950.

 

Early Life

John Dawson McGregor was born in Southampton, Ontario, on July 4, 1861. According to his death certificate, his parents were John McGregor and Elizabeth Inglis.)

On July 15, 1896, in Southampton, Ontario, John married Isabella Logie. She was born in Wemyss, Fife, Scotland on October 11, 1870. Her parents were William Logie (1832-1908) and Elizabeth Bonthrone (1835-1927).

 

To British Columbia

John appeared in the New Westminster directory in 1895. He was living at 99 Eighth Street and working as a shoemaker with Daniel Barclay, who had a business at 21 Eighth Street.

About 1896, John moved his business to Columbia Avenue in New Westminster.

New Westminster’s large fire of 1898 destroyed John’s business. He set up a new store on the south side of Columbia Street.

By 1900, John had moved to Vancouver, and he had business locations in both Vancouver and New Westminster.

Isabelle died in Vancouver on June 26, 1947. She was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

John died in Vancouver on July 30, 1950. He was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Burnaby.

John and Isabelle had the following children.

 

John Dawson McGregor

John Dawson McGregor was born in New Westminster, British Columbia on December 24, 1899.

He worked as a diesel and steam engineer with Vancouver Iron Works. He was a member of the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club.

On September 22, 1932, in Vancouver, John married Corena Marie Harkness, who was a stenographer. She was born in Oxford, Nova Scotia on October 12, 1902. Her parents were Percy Howard Harkness and Ila May Embee. (This marriage ended in divorce in Vancouver on June 29, 1942. Corena died in Vancouver on July 30, 1987.)

On October 14, 1943 in Vancouver, John married Audrey Hazel Lister, who was a stenographer. She was born on February 5, 1900, in Weston, Ontario. Her parents were Richard Lister and Rose Ann Barnett.

John died in Vancouver on December 27, 1948. He was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Audrey died in Vancouver on January 27, 1971.

 

William Logie McGregor

William Logie McGregor was born in Vancouver on December 10, 1900.

He became a marine engineer.

He never married.

William owned a 46 foot power cruiser boat called the Hoaloha, along with his brother, John. (The boat later had other names, including Marbob (1943), Eliza, Wild Rose (1996), and Katie Mack (2005).)

William died in Vancouver on August 10, 1985.

 

Elizabeth McGregor

Elizabeth McGregor was born in Vancouver on October 21, 1908.

She married Walter William Walsh, who worked as a hardware distributor. He was born in Vancouver on December 22, 1909. His parents were William Walsh and Jessie Steers.

Walter died in Victoria, British Columbia, on June 17, 1978. He was buried in Royal Oak Burial Park in Saanich, British Columbia.

Elizabeth died in Victoria, British Columbia, on November 16, 1990.

“A well-known Vancouver yachtsman and engineer died in hospital Monday here, following a long illness.

He is John D. McGregor, 49 of 1085 [sic: 1995] Beach.

Mr. McGregor was a member of the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club and had been employed as a diesel engineer by Vancouver Iron Works until he became ill last August.

His wife, Audrey, asks that persons intending to send floral tributes send donations to the B.C. Cancer Fund, instead.

Mr. McGregor was born in New Westminster, but lived most of his life in Vancouver. He attended Lord Roberts High School and was one of the youngest diesel engineers in B.C. when he took out his ticket in 1920.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his 87-year-old father, John D. Sr.; his brother, W.L. McGregor, and a sister, Mrs. Walter Walsh.

Funeral service will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. in Simmons & McBride Chapel by Rev. A.F. Munro. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.”
