Nelson, Arthur (1878-1958)

Arthur Nelson was a commercial agent for the Standard Soap Company of Calgary. Patrick Burns started the company in 1905 as part of his plan to use by-products from his stockyard and packing plant businesses.

Arthur lived at 1888 Georgia Street in 1908 and 1909.

He was born in Liverpool, England, on October 28, 1878.

Arthur’s father was Joseph Molyneux Nelson (about 1840-1891), a master mariner who was lost at sea at the end of 1891.

Arthur’s mother was Mary Beaumont. She was born in Liverpool on April 26, 1843. She died in Vancouver on May 8, 1917. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

In 1901, Arthur was living with his mother and other family members on Brereton Avenue in the Wavertree area of Liverpool. He was working as a commercial traveller.

By 1908, Arthur was at 1888 Georgia Street in Vancouver.

By 1911, he was the manager for Standard Brokerage Company. He was living with his mother and other family members at number 10 in The Cambridge Apartments at 950 Bidwell Street.

Arthur never married. He continued to work as a salesman. He lived in Vancouver and West Vancouver, before moving to Victoria about 1956. He died in Victoria, British Columbia, on January 9, 1958.

 

Other members of the Nelson family also lived in Vancouver.

 

William Nelson

William Nelson was born in England (probably in or near Liverpool area), on October 26, 1874.

He worked as a commercial traveller for the Remington Typewriter Company.

He never married. He died on July 22, 1945, in Essondale, British Columbia.

 

Susan Margaret Mary Nelson

Susan Margaret Mary Nelson was born in 1876, near Liverpool. She became a school teacher.

On October 3, 1908, in Hazelton, British Columbia, she married Harold Barber Metcalfe, who was a mercantile marine officer. He was born on April 9, 1883, in Sculcoates district, near Hull, England. His father was Harold James Metcalfe. His mother was Rosa (“Kate”) Barber.

Susan died in Hazelton on March 13, 1910.

On September 2, 1913, in Vancouver, Harold married Kathleen Marie Emilie Walton. She was born on March 6, 1883, in Northampton, England. Her father was Edwin Fletcher Walton. Her mother was Katherine Ellen Baker.

Harold and Kathleen later lived at Gibson’s, British Columbia.

Harold died in Sechelt, British Columbia, on July 8, 1969. He was buried in Seaview Cemetery at Gibson’s.

Kathleen died on June 30, 1975, in White Rock, British Columbia.

Harold and Susan had a daughter named Josephine Margaret Mary Metcalfe. She was born on March 4, 1910, in Hazelton. She never married. She became a school teacher. She died on August 20, 1943. She was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

 

Jessie Josephine Beaumont Nelson

Jessie Josephine Beaumont Nelson was born on May 7, 1881, in Liverpool.

On August 9, 1922, in Vancouver, she married Oliver Eby, who was a store manager. He was born on August 17, 1878, near Arran and Southampton, Ontario. His father was Daniel Eby. His mother was Hannah Clemens.

Jessie died on April 25, 1971, in Nanaimo, British Columbia.

Oliver died on November 22, 1973, in Nanaimo,

 

Blanche Nelson

Blanche Nelson was born in Liverpool on August 22, 1883.

She never married. She became a school teacher and principal at Granville House School.

She died in Victoria, British Columbia, on August 21, 1977.
