John George Hewitt Crawford (often called John George Crawford or J. G. Crawford) was an importer, commission merchant, and shipping agent.

According to the Vancouver directory, he lived at 1841 Barclay Street in 1900. (It appears that a later address for this house was 1835 Barclay Street.)

He was at 1835 Barclay Street in 1916.

Family Background

John George Crawford was born in Liverpool, England on July 18, 1858. His parents were George Crawford (born about 1836 in Fermanagh, Ireland) and Martha Wiseley (born about 1831 in Donegal, Ireland).

Marriage to Emma Smith

On August 23, 1881, Holy Trinity Church in Walton Breck, Liverpool, John married Emma Stanley Smith. She was born in Liverpool, England, on March 18, 1861. Her parents were Edward Stanley Smith and Rachel Dean.

To Vancouver

John and Emma arrived in Vancouver about 1891.

By early 1892, the Vancouver Daily World was referring to John as the local manager of Baker Brothers and Company:

“The World is indebted to Mr. Crawford, manager here for Messrs. Baker Bros. & Co., of Liverpool, for a copy of the Liverpool Journal of Commerce of the 19th Dec., in which appears a report of a meeting of the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce. The President of the Chamber in moving the adoption of the report amongst other matters said: “In regard to the request that the chamber should act as a local committee for the Chicago Exhibition, he thought that, had the application come some fifteen or twenty years previously, the chamber would have readily supported anything of the kind, but, owing to the extreme tariffs, nobody exhibiting in Chicago would get any business out of it, and in addition to that their patterns would be imitated by the Americans. He considered they were not interested one way or another, and he would suggest that they did not take the slightest trouble about it, especially as they were not a manufacturing centre. The minutes were then unanimously carried.”

Vancouver Daily World, January 6, 1892, page 2.

Later in January 1892, the Victoria Daily Colonist also had a reference to John [calling him Mr. I. Crawford] as the representative of Baker Brothers and Company:

The company went through a series of changes. In 1896, the Vancouver directories referred to John’s business as “Baker, Crawford & Co.” By 1898, the company was called “J. G. Crawford & Co.”

In 1900, the company sold its inventory, and the Crawfords prepared to move to Toronto, Ontario.

By 1917, John had established the Crawford Storage Company, which was his main business from then on.

McNeill, Welch and Wilson Ltd. supplied jingle pot coal and building material. John Duncan McNeill (1866-1958) was the managing director and president of the company.
