William Shannon was a farmer, real estate developer and investor. He lived at 1872 Nelson Street from 1910 to 1928. (During William’s long period of time in British Columbia, he was involved in many businesses and projects. The material below is only a brief outline. More information appears on Surrey History’s page on William Shannon: http://www.surreyhistory.ca/williamshannon.html.)

William Shannon was born on February 19, 1843, in County Sligo, Ireland. His parents were Peter Shannon and Catherine Lytle. About 1849 the Shannon family moved to Ops, Victoria County, near Lindsay, in what became Ontario.

About 1862, William travelled to western North America. He arrived in British Columbia in June 1863. His many ventures included a trading post in the southern Okanagan, farming in the Chilliwack area, and a freight transfer business in the Cariboo.

On December 15, 1886, in Manvers, Durham County, Ontario, William married Eliza Jane McIndoo. She was born in Manvers on July 14, 1954. Her parents were William McIndoo (1829–1915) and Sarah Byers (1830–1922).

In March 1887, William and Eliza moved to Vancouver. William first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1888. He was living on Water Street, and working in a real estate business with James Z. Hall (1863-1925).

William and Eliza had one child.

William Lloyd Shannon

William Lloyd Shannon was born in British Columbia in October 23, 1887.

He studied medicine at McGill University.

During the First World War he served with the Canadian Army Medical Corps. He was wounded twice, and suffered from what one of his friends called “war strain” when he came home after the war.

When he returned to Vancouver, he did not renew his medical practice. Instead, he worked in his father’s real estate firm.

He did not marry, and it appears that he did not have any children.

On December 26, 1922, in Vancouver, he drank prussic acid and died almost immediately. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Thomas Shannon

Thomas Shannon (1843-1909) was a brother of William Shannon.
