Harold Archibald Robinson was an inspector with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

He lived at Number 2, 1974 Georgia Street in 1913 and 1914 and at 1894 Alberni Street in 1915.

 

Family Background

Harold Archibald Robinson was born in Leyton, Essex, England, on February 6, 1879. His parents were Joseph and Lillian (or Harriet) Robinson.

Joseph Robinson was born in London, England, about 1844. He worked as a harness maker. Lillian (Harriet) was born in Dunmow, Essex, about 1851.

In 1881 and 1891 Harold was living with his parents in Low Leyton, Essex.

 

Military Service: South Africa

Harold served for two years with the British forces during the Boer War in South Africa.

At the time of the 1906 Canada Northwest Provinces census, Harold was in Calgary. According to the census, he was married to “A Robinson” and he had a son, Frank, who was born in Alberta in 1905. (However, there is also a 1908 Alberta marriage registration for Harold A Robinson and Rose Waters, so the formal marriage may not have occurred until 1908.)

At the time of the 1911 Canada census, Harold and Rose were at 1026 Clarke Drive in Vancouver. Harold was an inspector with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

As the inspector for the S. P. C. A., Harold sometimes travelled throughout British Columbia. He inspected urban and rural communities and he helped local groups to organize their own branches of the S.P.C.A.

Further Military Service

After the start of the First World War, several S.P.C.A. members joined the allied forces.

Harold did not join up at first, but on December 9, 1915, in Vancouver, he enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. His home address was 3200 block, West 32nd Avenue in Point Grey, British Columbia.

He served with the 102nd Battalion in France.

On May 18, 1918, Harold applied for a homestead at Ghost Pine Creek, which is east of Three Hills, Alberta.

In March 1921, a fire destroyed the house on the homestead.
