Harry Samuel Pratt was a tailor who lived at 990 Denman Street in 1913. He was a proprietor of Denman Dye Works, which was at 990 Denman Street from 1913 to 1916.

Early Life

Most sources indicate that Harry Samuel Pratt was born in Barking, Surrey, England on July 2, 1888. (Some sources say that he was born in Liverpool, England; others suggest that he was born as early as 1878.) Harry’s parents were William and Amelia Pratt. William Pratt was a tailor.

On August 27, 1907 at Edge Hill, St Cyprian, Lancashire, Harry married Esther Watt. She was born in Liverpool on December 22, 1888. Her parents were Thomas Watt (1852-1907) and Elizabeth Eilbeck (1854-1888). Thomas Watt worked as a cooper and plumber.

Esther had been married before, to George Henry Cook. Their marriage was in West Derby on December 4, 1905. (Some sources indicate that George died in 1907.)

It appears that Harry and Esther had a daughter, Alice Maud Pratt, who was born in 1909. She died later that year. (There may have been another child, who also died early: see 1911 England census information, below.)

In 1911, Harry and Esther were living in Liverpool, along with Harry’s stepdaughter, Emily Louisa Cook. Harry was working for a theatrical tailoring business.

To Vancouver

Harry first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1913. He was living at 990 Denman Street, and he was with Denman Dye Works from 1911 to 1915.

First World War

On February 4, 1915, in Vancouver, Harry enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force to serve in the First World War.

His wife, Esther, was living at 13 Stour Street, off Medlock Street in Kirkdale, Liverpool.

Harry was discharged from the military forces on May 29, 1919, during the general demobilization at the end of the war.

End of Marriage to Esther

It appears that Harry’s and Esther’s marriage was over by the end of the war. A note on his military file requested no changes to “address of lady if requested other than by lady herself.”

In 1924, Esther married Richard Bernard Crewe. Esther and Richard had a daughter, Doris (1925-2002).

Esther died in Liverpool in 1941.

In 1945, Richard Crewe was living with Doris at 13 Stour Street in Liverpool. (This is the same address that Harry Pratt provided for Esther during Harry’s time with the Canadian military forces in the First World War.)

It appears that Richard Crewe died in 1955.

Esther’s other daughter, Emilie Louisa Cook, died in 1990.

Gertrude Josephine Hughes

Harry returned to British Columbia. In the early 1920s, he began living with Gertrude Josephine Hughes. (According to their applications to become naturalized United States citizens, Harry and Gertrude were not married until May 24, 1950.)

Gertrude was born in Vancouver on January 18, 1899 at Cordova Street and Abbott Street (above the “Tiny Dog” store).

Williams’ Official BC Directory, 1899, page 685.

Vancouver Daily World, June 20, 1896, page 22, columns 5-6.

Gertrude’s parents were Ralph Hughes and Elmina DeGendron. Ralph Hughes was a waiter at the Atlantic Restaurant, which was at 73 Cordova Street.

On September 7, 1920, not long before Harry and Gertrude began living together, Gertrude had married Clifford Albert Kinghorn, who was a trainman.

Clifford Kinghorn was born on December 8, 1879 in Shakopee, Minnesota. His parents were Robert Pow (or Paw) Kinghorn (1844-1928) and Annie May Woods (1853-1907). This marriage seems to have ended quickly. The 1921 Vancouver directory listed C. A. Kinghorn at 1331 Granville Street. He was a brakeman. The 1930 United States census listed him as a widower.

Harry and Gertrude lived at the following addresses.

1922 2222 Cornwall Street
1923 Number 3, 201 West Eighth Street (North Vancouver)
1925 815 Battle Street (Kamloops)
1926 to 1941 1198 Harold Road (North Vancouver)

1949 2850 West 13th Avenue
1950 Not listed under Vancouver names
1951 1526 Nelson Street

Back to Vancouver

Harry and Gertrude returned to Vancouver, where Harry carried on his tailoring business. For a brief time in the mid-1930s he was also the treasurer of the Christadelphians.

The Pratts lived at 1198 Harold Road in North Vancouver in the 1920s and 1930s.

To Washington State

On January 18, 1952, Harry and Gertrude moved to Washington State.

Seattle, Washington, City Directory, 1953, page 1118 [edited image].

On October 10, 1957, in Seattle, Harry applied to become a naturalized United States citizen.

A man named Harry S. Pratt died in December 1961, and he was buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Seattle. (It is not certain that this is the same Harry Pratt.)

Gertrude died in October 1977. (Her death information referred to her as “Gertrude Josephine Hughes.”)

Harry and Gertrude had the following children.

Rene De Gendron Pratt

Rene De Gendron Pratt was born in Vancouver on February 7, 1922.

For a time he was a ship steward and an entertainer who used a variety of names, including “Harry Joseph Pratt,” “Joseph Richard Pratt,” “Richard Nelson,” and “Rene Degendron.”

Nektar de Flondor lived in the Sherman Square Studios, at 160 West 73rd Street in New York. This building’s sound-proofing made it popular with singers and other musicians.

“Remarkably, as The New York Times observed in 1927, the year before the completion of 160 West 73rd Street: ‘A notable feature of this building is the fact that it will be scientifically sound-proofed, even to the doors.’ These noise-dampening qualities of the Sherman Square Studios apartments made them initially very popular with musicians who practiced their instruments in their apartments without disturbing their neighbors. While the tenants of 160 West 73rd Street today include those of many other professions, the soundproof character of individual apartments persists, offering immense privacy.”: 160 West 73rd Street; http://www.solil.com/residence/160-west-73rd-street/.

It appears that Rene’s marriage to Baroness Nektar de Flondor did not last long.

In 1957, Rene was living in San Francisco, California, and he was working as a waiter.

Robert Pow (or Paw) Kinghorn (father of Clifford Albert Kinghorn)

Re: Robert and Anna Kinghorn of Minnesota m abt 1868; By Jennifer Hobbs; November 06, 2003; https://www.genealogy.com/forum/surnames/topics/kinghorn/232/:

“Robert Pow Kinghorn was born March 4, 1844, and died May 27, 1928. He worked at the Soo Line RR as a warehouse man. He is interred at Oakland Cemetery (MN). This was his obituary: “May 27, 1928: At St. John’s Hospital, Robert P. Kinghorn, aged 84 years. Beloved father of Mrs. C. E. Peters, Mrs. William Rockstroh of S. Paul, John of Juneau Alaska, Sam of Coquitlam, B. C., Clifford of Seattle Wash. Also six grandchildren. Funeral from Guthunz Chapel, 677 E. 7thSt. at Maria, Tuesday May 29, 2:30 p.m. Interment at Oakland Cemetery.”

He married Annie (or Anna?) May Woods. She was born August 29, 1853 in Chatham, Ontario, Canada. She died in St. Paul on February 24, 1907. My understanding is that she died of uterine cancer at the age of 54. Her father was Samuel Woods of Fletcher, Ontario, and her mother was Mary Woods. This was her obituary: “In St. Paul, Minn, Feb 24, 1907 at family residence, 396 East 7th St., Annie M. wife of Robert P. Kinghorn, aged 54 years.
