James Francis Thompson was born in Hove (or Steyning), Sussex, England on January 19, 1883. His parents were James Welsh Thompson and Maria Frances Alcock.
In 1901 James was living with his parents in Lincoln, England. He was an apprentice agricultural engineer.
Brief Time in Manitoba
In 1904, James travelled to Winnipeg, Manitoba, for about a year. He described himself as an engineer.
Marriage to Irene Deed
In 1906, James married Irene Elizabeth Deed in Newark, Nottinghamshire. She was born in Lincoln on November 10, 1884. Her parents were Percival Deed and Susannah Tyler.
In 1911, James and Irene were living in Ecclesall, Sheffield, England.
To Canada
In May 1914, James, Irene, and their children, Joan and Peter, sailed to Canada on R.M.S. Virginian.
They arrived in Quebec City, on their way to Medicine Hat, Alberta.
James appeared in the Medicine Hat directory in 1915.
To Vancouver
James first appeared in Vancouver directories in 1917. He was living at 1214 Denman Street, and he had a shoemaking business at the same address.
He lived at the following addresses in Vancouver.

Irene died in Vancouver on June 26, 1960.
James and Irene had the following children.
Joan Corona Thompson
Joan Corona Thompson was born on June 20, 1911, in Ecclesall Bierlow, Yorkshire, England.
In 1914, she sailed to Canada with her parents.
In 1921, she was living in Vancouver with her parents.
She later worked as a hairdresser.
On February 11, 1939, in Vancouver, Joan married Ernest Simpson Tufts, who was a flower salesman. He was born in St. John, New Brunswick, on March 28, 1915. His parents were Roy William Tufts and Marion Simpson.
Joan died in Richmond, British Columbia on December 20, 1988.
Philip Geoffrey Thompson
Philip Geoffrey Thompson was born in Lincoln, England, in 1907.
In 1911 he was living with his parents in Ecclesall, Sheffield, England.
In 1921, he was with his parents in Vancouver.
He became a pharmacist.
He married Frances Eleanor Kilpatrick. She was born in Vancouver on August 16, 1908.
Philip died in Vancouver on January 3, 1967. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.
Frances died in Vancouver on December 7, 1970. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.
Peter Welsh Thompson
Peter Welsh Thompson was born in Ecclesall Bierlow, Yorkshire, England, on July 9, 1913.
In 1914, he sailed to Canada with his parents.
In 1921, he was in Vancouver with his parents.
In 1930, he was a helper at his father’s Chippettes Company.
In 1939, he was an engineer.
He was not in the Vancouver directory from 1940 to 1945.
On August 8, 1942, in Vancouver, he married Ernestine Myra Knights. She was born in Montreal, Quebec on July 20, 1919. Her parents were Ernest Daniel Knights and Charlotte Mackell.
From 1946 to 1955 he was a claims officer with the Unemployment Insurance Commission.
Ernestine died in Vancouver on February 14, 1997.
Peter died in Vancouver on May 23, 1998.
Francis Donovan Thompson
Francis Donovan Thompson was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta, on September 7, 1915.
In 1921 he was living with his parents in Vancouver.
He worked as a health inspector.
He never married.
He died in New Westminster, British Columbia on November 11, 1996.
