Thomas Douglas Stark was a grocer. He lived at 1835 Barclay Street from 1920 to 1922.

Thomas Douglas Stark was born in Oakbank, Midlothian, Scotland, on May 17, 1881. His father was John Black Stark (dates), who was a blacksmith. Thomas’s mother was Janet Hart.

Thomas arrived in Canada about 1906.

On September 24, 1906, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, he married Agnes Trotter, who was born in in Scotland in March 1879. It appears that her father was George Trotter. Agnes had travelled from Scotland to Winnipeg, specifically for the wedding.

About 1908 Thomas and Agnes moved to British Columbia, where Thomas became the manager of the A. Macdonald business in Nelson.

In 1910 Thomas and Agnes visited in Victoria.

In 1911, Thomas became an alderman on the Nelson city council.

Thomas and Agnes appeared in the Nelson city directory in 1913.

Agnes died in Nelson on October 26, 1917. She was buried in the Nelson Cemetery.

William Barclay, the manager of A. Macdonald’s Vancouver office, died on August 21, 1918.

In October 1918, Thomas moved to Vancouver to manage the A. Macdonald office.

Thomas first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1919. He was living at the Vancouver Hotel Annex.

On September 1, 1919, Thomas was the best man at the wedding of John Brown Hart and Annie Maitland Perry.

On September 17, 1919, in Vancouver, Thomas married Janet Barclay, who was the widow of William Barclay. Janet was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on April 22, 1885. Her father was James Strachan, who was a mechanic. Janet’s mother was Mary Coates.

In 1920 the courts were still dealing with William Barclay’s estate.

In 1922, Thomas was a corporate member of A. MacDonald and Company.

In 1923 Thomas travelled to Scotland on a holiday. He returned on the S.S. Melita, landing at Quebec on May 20, 1923.

In the 1920s and early 1930s, Thomas had a manufacturers’ agent firm called Stark and Sterling.

In 1930 Janet went to Scotland. She returned to Canada on the Duchess of Atholl, and arrived in Montreal, Quebec, on October 17, 1930.

In the 1930s, Thomas became a manufacturer’s agent for Nestlé’s Milk.

Thomas died in Vancouver on January 16, 1944. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Janet died in Vancouver on July 18, 1967.

It appears that Thomas did not have any children. In the 1921 census, Janet’s daughters, Grace and Frances, were described as Thomas’s “wards.”

Mr. Stark, an agent for Nestle’s Milk Products, was born in Scotland and had lived in Vancouver for 25 years. He was a member of the Shaughnessy Heights Golf Club.
