Crawford, Arthur Wellesley (1884-1962)

Arthur Wellesley Crawford was a printer. He lived at 1995 Beach Avenue in 1909.

Arthur was born on May 6, 1884, in the Rural Municipality of Rockwood, Manitoba. His father was Andrew Crawford (1844-1888), who was born in County Antrim, Ireland. Andrew served with the Red River Expedition in 1870. Colonel Garnet Joseph Wolseley (1833-1913) had led the expedition, which was a response to Louis Riel’s provisional Métis government in Manitoba. Andrew Crawford died in the Rural Municipality of Rockwood, north of Winnipeg, Manitoba. He was buried in Victoria Cemetery in Balmoral, Manitoba.

Arthur’s mother was Mary Gowanlock Thom (1850-1928), who was born in Ontario. Her brother, Alexander Barton Thom, (1849-1926), a well-known photographer in Western Canada. After Andrew Crawford’s death in 1888, Mary lived in Manitoba until about 1927, when she moved to Vancouver and lived with her daughter, Grace. Mary died in Vancouver on November 3, 1928. On December 17, 1908, Arthur married Clara Shaw. She was born on June 20, 1879, in Nanaimo, British Columbia or on Mayne Island, British Columbia. Her father was Thomas Benjamin Shaw. Her mother was Annie Hughes.

It appears that Clara had been married before. On August 24, 1899, in Vancouver, Clara Shaw married Alexander Mearns. He was a logger who was born on December 31, 1864, in Cowichan, British Columbia. His parents were James and Mary Mearns. In 1901, Alexander and Clara were living in Vancouver. It is not clear what happened to Alexander Mearns.
