Nina Marian Trounce lived at 1012 Denman Street in 1913. (The directory list of names misspelled her given name as “Lina.”)

Nina Marian Trounce was born on July 30, 1875, in Bickleigh, Devonshire, England. Her father was William Henry Trounce (1852-1888). Her mother was Elizabeth Vivian Davis (1849-1887).

Trounce Family Background

Nina’s grandfather was Samuel Phillips Trounce (1822-1876).

Nina’s parents, William Henry Trounce and Elizabeth Vivian Davis, were married in St. George Hanover Square, London, in 1874. (William was often called “Harry,” and Elizabeth was known as “Bessie.”)

In 1881, William and Elizabeth were living in Menheniot, near Liskeard, Cornwall, along with Nina, her sister, Caroline, and her brother, Henry.

In the mid-1880s, Nina and Caroline stayed in England while their parents went to live in Saskatoon in the North-West Territories, where they had about three other children. Saskatoon was then the site of the Temperance Colony of Nutana.

In 1885, the Trounces opened the first permanent store in Saskatoon. Their restored house, currently at the rear of 512-10th Street in Saskatoon, is apparently Saskatoon’s oldest surviving building.

Nina Trounce’s Early Life

Nina and her sister lived with their grandmother in England while their parents were in Canada. Nina went to school in Mutley, Plymouth, Devonshire. The operators of the school were the “Misses Peeke” (sometimes spelled “Peake.”)

In the late 1870s the school was at 4 Ford Park.

By 1891, Nina was a student at Godolphin School in Salisbury, Wiltshire.

In the 1901 England and Wales census, Nina was visiting in Ipswich St Margaret, Suffolk, England, with Henry Bartlett Kitley. (Mr. Kitley and his wife, Lilian, later lived in Vancouver, at 1076 Denman Street from 1914 to 1918 and at 1096 Denman Street from 1919 to 1922.)

Nina’s Life in North America

Nina travelled to Canada about 1911.

By 1912, she was living at 1428 Beach Avenue in Vancouver, along with her sister, Caroline Shepheard Trounce (1878-1927), and her brother, Louis James Trounce (1885-1963).

Arthur and Nina returned to Vancouver by the time of the 1921 Canada census. Arthur worked briefly as an architect with Townley and Matheson.

About 1924, Arthur and Nina moved to California, along with their daughter.

In 1930 and 1940, Arthur and Nina were living in Oakland, California.
