Nicholson, Francis John (1876-1944)

 

Francis John (“Frank”) Nicholson was a medical doctor and a director of Pioneer Gold Mines. He lived at 1826 Nelson Street from 1907 to 1911 and from 1913 to about 1931.

 

Family Background

Francis John Nicholson was born in Victoria, British Columbia, on July 13, 1876. His parents were Thomas Nicholson (1841-1914) and Sarah Eleanor Jenkinson (1885-1929).

Thomas Nicholson was a teacher in Victoria.

 

 

Sarah Nicholson died in Vancouver on July 10, 1929.

Early Life

Francis went to for a time to Craigflower School in Victoria. In 1886, he won a prize for “improvement in penmanship.”

He attended Stanford University in California, where he studied zoology and physiology.

Later he studied medicine at McGill University in Montreal. In 1899, he was on the faculty at McGill.

 

To Yukon

By 1901, Francis had established a medical practice at Whitehorse in the Yukon Territory. He was the superintendent of the first hospital in Whitehorse. By about 1902, he was living in a house at 209 Elliott St. in Whitehorse. (The house was demolished in February 2008.)

 

Marriage to Hulda Graves

On December 1, 1902, in Calgary, Alberta, Francis married Hulda Esther Graves, who had also been living in Whitehorse since about 1901. She was born on October 31, 1873, in Moncton, New Brunswick. Her parents were Howard Graves and Caroline Jenkinson.

After the wedding, Francis and Hulda went to Victoria, British Columbia, for a short visit.

Francis and Hulda returned to Whitehorse at the end of December 1902.

To Vancouver

In 1906, Francis travelled to Victoria, on his way to set up an office in Vancouver.

The Nicholsons moved into a house at 1826 Nelson Street, where they stayed until about 1931.

They appeared in Vancouver social directories in 1908, 1914 and 1927.

Military Service

In 1915, Francis enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He served with the Canadian Army Medical Corps during the First World War.

He served in Canada, England, France and Salonika. In 1916, he was a member of the standing medical board for examination of recruits in Vancouver.

He was allowed to resign from military service on September 22, 1919.

 

Return to Civilian Life

After the war, Francis continued to maintain his medical practice in Vancouver. He also became a director of Pioneer Mines.

Francis and Hulda were at 1826 Nelson Street in the Vancouver directories until 1931. In 1932 and 1933 they did not appear in the Vancouver directories. They travelled frequently in the 1930s, especially to San Francisco and Honolulu.

 

Move to 4610 Connaught Drive

By 1934, the Nicholsons had moved to 4610 Connaught Drive in Shaughnessy Heights.

 

 

4610 Connaught Drive was the former home of William Henry Day, a Dodge dealer, whose business was at 1126 West Georgia Street.

William Henry Day had two children: Edwin Ethelbert Day (1899-1974) was a doctor; Marjorie Day (1898-after 1940) was married to Ernest Charles Hoy (1895-1982), the first person to fly from Vancouver to Calgary (1919). William Henry Day died in Vancouver on September 7, 1931. Mr. Day’s widow, Jane, lived in the house for about two years; she later lived at 1590 West 15th Avenue. She died in Vancouver on May 17, 1946.

 

Later Life

Francis and Hulda lived at 4610 Connaught Drive through the 1930s and early 1940s.

Francis died in Vancouver on May 10, 1944.

Louis Francis Nicholson

Louis Francis Nicholson was born in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, on October 31, 1902 (although some sources say 1903).

He served with the United States Army during the Second World War.

He married Estelle Iring Lortz. She was born on December 14, 1900, in Louisville, Kentucky. Her parents were Louis Lortz (1855-1914) and Caroline Heeb (1862-1935).

Louis was a cattle rancher. He retired about 1945.

Estelle died in Victoria, British Columbia, on December 23, 1968.

Louis died in Victoria on September 23, 1972.

Eleanor Hulda Nicholson

Eleanor Hulda Nicholson was born on September 15, 1905, in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory.

She became a school teacher.

On December 29, 1926, in Vancouver, she married Ross Thompson, who was an accountant. He was born in Port Arthur, Ontario, on May 18, 1896. His parents were Ross Thompson and Elizabeth Agnes McDougall.

Ross continued to work as an accountant. In later years, his employer was Pioneer Mines.

Ross died in Vancouver on December 28, 1954. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Eleanor died in Coquitlam, British Columbia, on June 20, 1986.

 

Howard Graves Nicholson

Howard Graves Nicholson was born in Vancouver on November 4, 1908.

He was a talented student. In 1929 he won a MacMillan Scholarship.

In February 1936, in Vancouver, he married Mary Elaine Colledge.

Caroline Nicholson was born in Vancouver on September 27, 1912.

She became a registered nurse.

On September 9, 1939, in Vancouver, she married Donald McTavish Wright, who was an engineer. He was born on February 15, 1910, in Welland, Ontario. His parents were Robert Hanlon Wright and Annie Loretta McTavish.
