Apenes, Rasmus Adolf (1852-1905)

Rasmus Adolf Apenes was a clerk for the Canadian Pacific Railway, and was a bookkeeper and commercial agent for a series of trading companies. He lived at the corner of Beach Avenue and Park Road (probably in the 2000 block of Beach Avenue) in 1901.

He was born on October 19 (or 20), in 1852 (or 1854), probably in Tune, a former municipality in Østfold county, Norway. His father was also called Rasmus Apenes.

On March 24, 1881, in Tønsberg, Vestfold, Norway, he married Kaja Foyn. She was born in Norway, probably in Tønsberg, on July 27, 1857, in. Her father was Mathias Foyn (1825-1875); her mother was Amelie Lorentzen (1833-1926).

Rasmus came to Canada about 1887. Kaja came to Canada about 1889. Rasmus and Kaja were naturalized as Canadian citizens in 1890.

He first appeared in Vancouver in 1890, working as a clerk for the Canadian Pacific Railway.

By 1902, the Apenes family was gone from Vancouver, probably to Washington State.

Rasmus died on December 7, 1905, in Anacortes, Skagit County, Washington State. He was buried in Grand View Cemetery in Anacortes.

Kaja died in Anacortes, on June 2, 1928. She was also buried in Grand View Cemetery.

Signe Apenes (daughter of Rasmus Adolf Apenes and Kaja Foyn)

Signe Apenes was born on September 17, 1887, in Hong Kong. On March 20, 1907, in Skagit County, Washington State, she married Ivan Alexander. He was born in Washington State in 1879. His parents were Joseph Alexander and Lucy Bradle.

In 1920 and 1930, Signe and Ivan were living La Conner, Washington State, with Ivan and three daughters, Karen, Constance and Margaret.

Ivan died in La Conner on July 10, 1935. He was buried in Fern Hill Cemetery, Anacortes, Washington.

Signe died on May 10, 1969, in Mount Vernon, Washington State. She was buried in Fern Hill Cemetery in Anacortes.

Hildur Apenes (daughter of Rasmus Adolf Apenes and Kaja Foyn)

Hildur Apenes was born on February 11, 1889, in Vancouver.

On January 6, 1913, in King County, Washington, she married Seymour Melvin Newell. He was born in New Brunswick on January 21, 1876.

Seymour died in Fortson, Snohomish, Washington, on January 7, 1948.

Hilda died in March 1967, while living in Port Angeles, Clallam, Washington.

Seymour Melvin Newell and Hildur Apenes had a son.

Robert Melvin Newell (son of Seymour Melvin Newell and Hildur Apenes)

Robert Melvin Newell was born in Washington State on October 29, 1918. On November 1, 1942, in Los Angeles County, California, he married Gertrude Adelia Brawner. She was born about 1920 in Denver, Colorado. Her father was William Henry Brawner (born in Delawan, Illinois); her mother was Gertrude Lindsay (born in Humansville, Missouri).

Robert died in Los Angeles, California, on October 8, 2007.

Gunnar Foyn Apenes was born in Vancouver on January 1, 1893.

He was a private with the 23rd Engineers in the United States Military during the First World War. He entered service from San Francisco, California on October 17, 1917; he was engaged in the Meuse-Argonne offensive. He was overseas for 15 months. He was discharged at Camp Lewis in Washington on June 25, 1919.

He was living in Anacortes, Washington in 1920 and 1930.

Gunnar Foyn Apenes was a social service worker at Northern State Hospital (Washington State) in 1932.

Between 1930 and 1936, he was married to Blanche (probably Smith), who was born in Washington State about 1896.

On July 8, 1936, he was killed in a car accident at the intersection of Memorial Highway (Highway 20) at the intersection of Best Road. in Mount Vernon, Skagit County, Washington State. He was buried in Evergreen Washelli Memorial Park, in Seattle, Washington.

Eric Apenes was born on April 7, 1896, in Vancouver. He served as a wagoner with the Engineers of the American Expeditionary Force during the First World War. He enlisted in Bellingham, Washington on September 26, 1917. He trained at Camp American University, Washington, D.C.; he sailed overseas on November 12, 1917, and returned to the United States on April 30, 1919. He was discharged at Camp Lewis, Washington, on May 26, 1919.

He was living in Anacortes, Washington in 1920, 1930, and 1940.

Between 1930 and 1940, he was married to Mona Iris George. She was born on October 18, 1909, in British Columbia (or Washington State). Mona graduated from a hospital nursing program and became a registered nurse in 1928.

Eric died in June 1969 in Skagit County, Washington. He was buried in Grand View Cemetery in Anacortes.

Mona died in Anacortes on February 22, 1996. She was buried in Grand View Cemetery in Anacortes.

  2. Gunnar Foyn Apenes was a social service worker at Northern State Hospital (Washington State) in 1932 and possibly earlier and later. Mona George Apenes graduated from hospital nurse program and became a registered nurse in 1928.
