Family Background
Albert Keith Preston was born on September 7, 1860, in Hampstead, London. His parents were William and Emma Preston.
William Preston was born about 1809. He was an East India tea merchant. It appears that he was married twice. From his first marriage, he had at least three older children who were born in Calcutta, India. His second marriage, to Emma, was in 1859. (Her name sometimes appears as Emma Fuell; in the 1871 England census, her unmarried sister is Eliza Snell.)
William died in 1870.
Emma died in 1905.
Albert Keith Preston
In 1881, Albert was living in Hampstead, London, with his mother, Emma.
In 1886, in Richmond, Surrey, Albert married Hattie Emily Brett. She was born on March 24, 1866, in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire. Her parents were Charles George Brett and Annie Wakefield.
In 1891, Albert and Hattie were living on Lincoln Road in Finchley, Middlesex. Albert was a manager of a tea warehouse.
In 1901, Albert and Hattie were living in Altrincham, Chester, southwest of Manchester. Albert was a tea agent.
In 1911, Albert and Hattie were still in Altrincham. Albert was a commission agent.
By 1913, Albert Preston had arrived in Vancouver. He appeared at the following addresses.

In September 1916, Albert enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force to serve during the First World War. He said that his birth date was September 7 (In his attestation paper, he did not state the year of his birth; other records show that he claimed it was 1871, rather than his real birth year of 1860.)
In 1923, Albert began working as a salesman with Orchardson and Company. (This company was the successor to F. Griffin and Company Limited. Frederick Griffin lived at 1019 Gilford Street from 1917 to 1919. Further information appears on the page for Frederick Griffin.)
Albert continued to work with Orchardson and Company until 1943.
Albert died in Vancouver on June 3, 1943.
Hattie died in Vancouver on March 2, 1944.
Albert and Hattie had the following children.
Kenneth Preston
Kenneth Preston was born on March 31, 1887 in Finchley, Middlesex.
In 1891 and 1901 he was living with his parents.
It appears that Kenneth was no longer living in 1943. He may have died in 1934, in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.
Audrey Preston
Audrey Preston was born in Finchley, Middlesex, in 1888.
On July 5, 1918, in Alberni, British Columbia, she married William Richmond, who was a fish curer. He was born in Grimsby, England, about 1872. His parents were Nelson Hooper Richmond and Charlotte Sprouston.
In 1944, Audrey was living in New Westminster, British Columbia.
In 1955, William and Audrey were still in New Westminster.
Enid Preston
Enid Preston was born in Beeston, Nottinghamshire on July 7, 1900.
Enid married Reginald Christopher Thornton. He was born on July 18, 1883, in High Cross, Ware, Hertfordshire. His parents were Claude Cecil Thornton and Alice Henrietta Giles-Puller.
Reginald died in Vancouver on March 2, 1978.
Enid died in Vancouver on August 28, 1979.
Enid and Reginald had a son, Robin Christopher Giles Thornton. In 1950 he won the Governor General’s Gold Medal as head of the graduating class for the B.A. degree at the University of British Columbia.

Born in Grantham, Eng., Mrs. Preston had lived in Vancouver for 32 years. Her husband, the late Albert Keith Preston, was a city broker, with the firm of Orchardson Ltd.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Wm. Richmond, New Westminster; Mrs. R.C. Thornton, Vancouve,; six grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. R. Lathbury, England.”
