Shardlow, Harry (1867-1919)

Harry Shardlow was a former soldier who worked as a ward master at the Vancouver General Hospital. He lived at 1966 Georgia Street in 1918.

 

Early Life

Harry Shardlow was born on July 26, 1867, in Sneinton, Nottinghamshire, England. His parents were John Shardlow (1837–1906) and Mary Ann Maltby (1839–1923). John Shardlow sometimes worked as a tailor.

 

Military Service in India

About 1885, Harry became a member of the Imperial army; he served in India with the Derbyshire regiment.

Marriage to Sarah Bennison

Harry returned to England. In 1893, in Nottingham, he married Sarah Jane Bennison. She was born on April 30, 1871, in Grantham, England. Her parents were John Bennison and Sarah Jane Perry.

 

South African War

Harry also served in the South African war.

In 1901, Harry and Sarah were living in Nottingham. Harry was working as a machine fitter in a cycle factory.

 

Move to Canada

In 1905, Harry and his family settled in Revelstoke, British Columbia.

While he was in Revelstoke, Harry often won prizes for his shooting skill.

To Vancouver

The Shardlow family later moved to Vancouver, where Harry was connected with the 11th Irish Fusiliers.

Harry first appeared in the Vancouver directory in 1912. He was living in the Kenilworth apartments at 843 Cardero Street, and he was working there as a janitor.

Harry’s daughter, Gertrude, was also living in the Kenilworth apartments.

Military Service: First World War

In 1914, Harry went to Australia. On May 13, 1915, he joined the Australian military forces and served for a time in France. (His Australian service number was 2671; this number sometimes appears in various sources that suggest a connection between this number and the Canadian Army Medical Corps.)

Because of health issues, Harry received a military discharge in 1917.

Return to Vancouver

Harry returned to Canada and he joined the Military Hospital Commission in Vancouver.

In 1918 he was living at 1966 Georgia Street. In 1919 he was 579 East 60th Avenue.

He died in South Vancouver, British Columbia, on October 14, 1919.

Harry was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Sarah’s Later Life

On May 5, 1920, in South Vancouver, Sarah married James Smyth, who was a widowed farmer. He was born in Ontario on May 10, 1874. His parents were Isaiah Smyth and Nancy Currie.

James and Sarah went to live in Cowley, west of Fort MacLeod, Alberta.

In April 1934, Sarah suffered a stroke.

In the fall of 1934, James and three children went on a motor trip in Canada and the United States.

On the way back home, James developed pneumonia. He died in Vancouver on October 30, 1934.

Gertrude Martha Shardlow

Gertrude Martha Shardlow was born on September 27, 1894, in Bolton, England.

On August 3, 1917, in Vancouver, Gertrude married Thomas Arthur White. He was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, on August 17, 1888.

Gertrude died on February 13, 1970. She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Thomas died in Vancouver on April 27, 1977.

Gertrude and Thomas had a son.

 

Theodore William White

Theodore William White was born in Vancouver on May 10, 1920.

He married Edna Smurthwaite. She was born on December 29, 1923, in Durham, England. Her parents were Thomas Smurthwaite and Gladys Pendlebury.

Theodore was living in Regina, Saskatchewan in 1970. He died in Vancouver on September 14, 1992.

Edna died in Vancouver on January 27, 1994.

She is survived by her loving family for whom she had a mutually deep and abiding love; children, Bruce Wheatcroft (Bill Hutton) and Brenda (Dan) Pattison; extended family Wilf Gray, Sharon (Tony) Cockton, Vince (Pat) Gray, Tilly (Roy) Wall, John Gray, fourteen grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law Winnifred Gray and Joan Gray, and numerous loving nieces and nephews throughout southern Alberta. She was predeceased by her first husband Harvey Wheatcroft, her second husband Arthur Gray, as well as her brothers Harry and Eddy Smyth. Murl was born and spent her school years in Cowley, Alberta. She was an accomplished dressmaker, and managed the Singer Sewing Centre in Coleman, prior to moving to Calgary and continuing her career from home. During the war, while Harvey was overseas, she worked at the Gainsborough Art Gallery, and later for Sears. Following Harvey’s passing in 1968, she returned to Cowley, marrying Arthur in 1970. Upon retirement, they moved to Pincher Creek, where Murl was an avid bowler, and volunteered countless hours at the hospital truck shop. She was a life member of the Anglican Church Women’s group. Murl was a very social person, and loved to be with friends and family. A celebration of her life will be held at Pincher Funeral Chapel on Monday, June 1 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that expressions of love and care be made in Murl’s memory directly to The Good Samaritan Society, Vista Village, Pincher Creek.
