Marriage and Early Life in Toronto

On June 6, 1888, in Waterloo, Ontario, William married Dorothy Ann Ellis. She was born in Waterloo on February 4, 1865. Her parents were William E. Ellis (1819-1891) and Nancy Andrews Nelles (1830-1907).

William’s first two children were born in Toronto, in 1891 and 1895.

According to some sources, William arrived in Vancouver in 1894, and he lived for a time on Kitsilano Beach. This story may be true, but the Vancouver directories did not list William until 1899. As well, it appears that William was still living in Toronto until 1898.

In the 1895 Toronto directory, William was a manager at J.W. Lang and Company, which was the same place he had been working in 1888.
