West Vancouver Presbyterian Church, The Compass, Christmas 2014, page 16; http://westvanpresbyterian.ca/wp-content/uploads/the_compass_2014_3.pdf: “Joan Chard is a member of Kerrisdale Presbyterian Church, but as she lives in West Vancouver, she attends WVPC quite regularly, about which we are delighted. In fact, Glenn was her minister. Joan has had a varied and brilliant career. Joan’s first degree is a B.A. in English Literature and Classics from U.B.C. She enjoyed her first job as a lecturer in the Department of English at Simon Fraser University, the year it opened— 1965. Then Joan got a Master’s Degree in English Literature from Dalhousie University in Halifax, went back to lecturing, first at the St. Vincent’s University in Halifax, and then the University of Alberta in Edmonton. Then it was off to Union Theological Seminary and Columbia University in New York for another Master’s in Biblical Studies and Missiology. Joan has lived in Japan three times, where she worked as an Associate Professor, each time at a different university. This was a program through the United Church of Canada. One was the Tokyo Woman’s Christian University, started in 1918 as a result of a Missionary Conference in Edinburgh in 1910. One of the many highlights in Joan’s life and career was being presented to Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip in 1978 when she was the first woman to win the Queen Elizabeth Second Scholarship for Post Graduate study in the U.K. Joan got her PhD from Edinburgh University. Prior to her retirement in 2009, Joan taught with Paddy Eastwood (our speaker at the Nov. 24 luncheon) at the Vancouver School of Theology— the Canadian Studies Program for students from Japan. Joan is also an accomplished pianist and organist, and we enjoy having her fill in when Haruyo Abramson is on vacation. Joan began piano lessons age from her father, Alfred W. Chard, organist and choir director of Chalmers United Church from 1941 to 1987. Not surprisingly, Joan mentioned what excellent senses of humour the Queen and Prince Phillip have. Other interests of Joan’s include Scottish Country and Israeli dancing, painting and poetry.
