Family Background

Emery Jay Welsh was born in Portland, Oregon on May 7, 1895 (or 1896). His parents were William Howe Welsh (1865-1912) and Margaret McFadden (1866-1946).

William Howe Welsh was born in Illinois on June 30, 1865. His parents were William Thomas Welsh and Virginia King. By 1880, the Welsh family was in California.

William Howe Welsh worked for a time as a bricklayer, but he was best known for his activities as a detective.

The Welsh family lived in Portland, Oregon in the 1890s. From 1894 to 1897, William was a member of the Portland police force.

By the late 1890s, the Welshes were in Dawson City in the Yukon Territory. William was a member of the Royal North West Mounted Police force’s detective group, and he took part in capturing several criminals who were at large.

In 1906, he was a corporate member and provisional director of The Canadian Detective Bureau Limited, which had its head office in Dawson City.

The immigration document gave his address as Essondale Mental Hospital, and stated that he had left the hospital without permission.

Little further information is available for him. He died in Vancouver on May 24, 1973. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Possible Daughter of Emery Welsh

It appears that Emery was not married. However, there is a death certificate for an infant girl who died in Everett, Washington on May 9, 1925. She was buried in Mount Carmel Cemetery in Snohomish County, Washington. Her parents were Emery J. Welsh and Mary E. Doyle. According to the death certificate, Emery was born in Alaska and Mary was born in New Westminster, British Columbia. Mary’s home address in 1925 was in New Westminster.

There is a 1926 delayed registration of birth for Mary Elizabeth Doyle, who was born in New Westminster on March 4, 1903. Mary’s mother, Mary Ann Doyle, was the informant on the birth registration. Her address was 512 Kelly Street in New Westminster. (Wrigley Henderson Amalgamated British Columbia Directory, 1925, page 810 has the following entry: Doyle, Mary wid J h 512 Kelly N Westr.)

There is a death certificate for Mary Elizabeth Doyle, who died in New Westminster on August 26, 1953. According to the death certificate, she was a registered nurse who was born in New Westminster on March 4, 1901. Her parents were James Doyle and Mary Ann Hamilton. She never married. It is not certain that this person is the mother of the baby girl who died in 1925.
