John Holton Shields was a farmer who lived at 1830 Comox Street in 1917.

John Holton Shields was born about 1863 (possibly on September 5) near Hamilton, Ontario. His parents were William Shields and Mary Ann Graham.

On February 7, 1889, in Seneca, Ontario, he married Jane Ann Colter. She was born in Ontario on March 17, 1860.

In 1901, John and Jane were living in Seneca. John was a farmer.

 

Move to Oregon

About 1905, the Shields family moved to Oregon.

In 1908, John was living in Salem, Oregon. He applied to become a naturalized United States citizen.

In 1910, John and Jane were Chemawa, north of Salem. John was a farmer.

In 1913, John and Jane (called “Jennie”) were living at 2035 Fairgrounds Road in Salem.

Divorce from Jane

In 1916, John sued Jane for divorce. He also asked for custody of their minor children.

The court granted the divorce and gave custody of the children to Jane.

Jane died in Salem on July 3, 1920. She was buried in Salem Pioneer Cemetery.

John’s Marriage to Lottie

On December 9, 1916, in Vancouver, John married Charlotte (“Lottie”) Ann Manning (née Carter). She was born about 1869 near St. Catharines, Ontario. Her parents were Nelson Carter (1844-1924) and Eleanor Hopkins (1850-1923).

Charlotte had been married before (on December 12, 1893) to George Wesley Manning, who was a butcher. He was born about 1867 in Ontario. His parents were Samuel and Ann Manning.

George died in Vancouver on September 18, 1901.

By 1911, Charlotte and her children were living at 1129 Comox Street in Vancouver.

 

John and Lottie after Marriage

In 1917, John was living at 1830 Comox Street.

In 1918 he was at 1736 McDonald Street. (According to the Vancouver directory, John’s son, John H. Shields, Junior, was on active service with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. No further information is available for John, Junior.)

In 1920, John and Lottie were defendants in an Oregon lawsuit. Their neighbours wanted to enforce a right of way over John’s and Lottie’s land.

It appears that John and Lottie were separated or divorced sometime in the 1920s.

In the 1930 United States census, Lottie was living in Maple Leaf, King County, Washington. The census described her as a widow. In the 1940 United States census, she was in Buchanan Election Precinct, King County. The census described her as a widow.

In the 1930 United States census, John was working on a sheep farm in Lane County, Oregon. The census described him as a widow. (According to the census, his birth year was 1869.) In the 1940 United States census, John was in Salem. The census described him as a widow. (The 1940 census gave his birth year as 1863.)

John died in Salem on December 31, 1942. He was buried in the City View Cemetery in Salem.

Lottie died in Seattle, Washington, on October 16, 1945. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Herbert Cameron Shields was born in Ancaster, Ontario on November 17, 1889.

In 1901 he was living with his parents in Ontario.

In 1910 he was with his parents in Chemawa, north of Salem, Oregon.

On September 16, 1914, in Salem, Oregon, he married Nell Louise Ferguson. She was born in Rainsboro, Ohio on January 29, 1893.

In 1917, Herbert registered with the United States military draft system. He was not required to serve, because his mother, wife and child depended on him for support.

In 1920, 1930 and 1940, Herbert and Nell were living in Portland, Oregon.

In 1920, Herbert was a candy maker. In 1930, he was a truck driver for an ice cream store. By the late 1930s he was the proprietor of a candy shop.

Nell died in Portland on September 17, 1943. She was buried in Lincoln Memorial Park in Portland.

Herbert died in Portland on March 5, 1956. He was buried in Lincoln Memorial Park in Portland.

 

Clarissa Irene Shields

Clarissa Irene Shields was born in Etobicoke Township, Ontario on June 8, 1891. (She was often called “Irene.”)

In 1901 she was living with her parents in Ontario.

In 1910 she was with her parents in Chemawa, near Salem, Oregon.

On September 4, 1912, she married Frank I. Stoddard, who operated a confectionery store in Salem. He was born in Brown, South Dakota on February 27, 1892.

Myrtle Etta Shields

Myrtle Etta Shields was born in Weston Township, Ontario on April 9, 1893.

In 1901 she was living with her parents in Ontario.

In 1910 she was with her parents in Chemawa, near Salem, Oregon.

On August 16, 1919, in Portland, Oregon, she married Earl Francis Foster. He was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota on May 2, 1895.

In 1920, Myrtle and Earl were in Portland. In 1930, they were in Los Angeles, California. Earl was and electrical clerk for a telephone company.

She was in Detroit, Michigan in 1940.

On December 15, 1941, Earl and Myrtle were divorced. On June 15, 1943, in Allen, Indiana, Earl married Opal Mae Wherry.

In 1943, Myrtle was in Portland, Oregon. No further information is available for her.

 

Ella May Shields

Ella May Shields was born in Hamilton, Ontario on October 19, 1896.

In 1901 she was living with her parents in Ontario.

In 1910 she was with her parents in Chemawa, near Salem, Oregon.

In 1920, she was living with her mother in Salem.

On June 5, 1920, she married Charles William Barker. He was born in Shoreditch, London, England, in 1898.

Ella died in Portland on September 8, 1934. She was buried in the Salem Pioneer Cemetery in Salem, Oregon.

Charles died in Oregon on June 1, 1983.

 

Grace Eveline Shields

Grace Eveline Shields was born in Seneca, Ontario on November 28, 1898.

In 1901 she was living with her parents in Ontario.

In 1910 she was with her parents in Chemawa, near Salem, Oregon.

In 1920 she was living with her mother in Salem.

On June 2, 1923, she married Frank I. Stoddard, who was the widower of Grace’s sister Irene.

In 1930 and 1940, Grace and Frank were living in Salem.

In August 1940, Grace parked the family car on Union Street, between Front Street and the railroad bridge that crossed the Willamette River.

She apparently walked out onto the bridge and took her own life by jumping into the river.

William John Shields

William John Shields was born in Seneca, Ontario on January 8, 1902.

In 1910 he was living with his parents in Chemana, Oregon.

In 1920 he was in Portland, working as a waiter in a restaurant.

It appears that he was an inmate in the state penitentiary in Salem, Oregon in 1930 and 1940.

He registered with the United States military draft system during the Second World War.

He died in Oregon in 1970, and he was buried in Oak Creek Cemetery, Glide, Douglas County, Oregon.

“Nelson Carter landed in Victoria, B.C. in March 1885.  He moved to Vancouver and started a brick yard at Rouse’s Point which he carried on until 1892 when he came to Haney and bought the McLaren brickyard.  This yard extended from the Bank of Montreal, on the corner of 224th and Lougheed, West of where the Haney Hotel sits at 222nd and Lougheed. He was a creative mason and built the unusual fireplace at the Maple Ridge Museum and another in son Horace’s house.

Nelson later bought the Howison property and built a residence.  He had one son killed in the Great War.  At the time of his death in October of 1924, he left three daughters, three sons, twenty grandchildren and three great grandchildren.  His children were Mrs. Shields of Wash. U.S., Mrs Howe of Haney, Mrs. F.L. Ford of Port Kells, Fred of Vancouver, Horace of New Westminster and Obie who was living at the family home.”
