John A. Downing was a poll tax collector. The Downing family lived at 952 Denman Street from 1900 to 1902 and at 1954 Georgia Street from 1902 to 1916.

John A. Downing was born in Tweed, Ontario on December 7, 1842. His parents were William and Lydia Downing.

In 1880, John was living in Evart, Michigan, along with his sister, and her husband. John was working as an accountant.

On June 9, 1882, in Toronto, Ontario, John married Charlotte Eliza Breeze. She was born in Kingston, Ontario on July 24, 1850. Her parents were Robert Glover Breeze (1811–1868) and Frances Marshall Harrison (1819–1897).

For the rest of the 1880s and the early 1890s, John and Charlotte lived in Brandon, Franklin County, New York State, which is where all their children were born.

The Downings first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1898. John Downing was a merchant, living at 1130 Davie Street.

From 1898 to 1916, the Downing family lived at the following addresses in Vancouver.

John died in Vancouver on June 4, 1906. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

After 1916, Charlotte lived at Tynehead on Rural Route 3, near Cloverdale, British Columbia, sometimes with her sons Cecil and Tracy.

Charlotte died at the Tynehead home on December 14, 1929. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

John and Charlotte had the following children.

 

Tracy Wilkinson Downing

Tracey Wilkinson Downing was born in Brandon, New York State, on April 10, 1882 (or 1883).

In 1930, Tracy was working as a rancher.

On September 13, 1930, in St. Helen’s Church in South Westminster, British Columbia, he married Florence Estelle Le Cronier, who was a music teacher. She was born in Brooklyn, New York State on November 8, 1871. Her parents were John George Le Cronier and Sarah Hobbs.

Florence died in Murrayville, British Columbia, on April 3, 1957.

Tracy retired about 1960. He died in Langley, British Columbia, on October 14, 1968.

Claire Spence Downing was born in Brandon, New York State, on April 16, 1887.

He was an amateur photographer, and he took many photographs of the Vancouver area, including nature scenes, indigenous homes and artwork, and maritime activities.

He established a successful wholesale plumbing supplies business.

On July 9, 1915, in Vancouver, he married Annie Margaret Todhunter. She was born in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, on July 1, 1889. Her parents were Thomas Todhunter and Agnes Gibson Gillespie.

In 1946, Claire was the first chairman of the Metropolitan Parks Planning Board.

Annie died in North Vancouver, British Columbia, on May 26, 1947. She was buried in Capilano View Cemetery in West Vancouver.

Claire later married Dorothy MacTavish. She was born on June 27, 1889, in Victoria, British Columbia. Her parents were Duncan MacTavish and Amelia Helmcken.

Claire died in West Vancouver, British Columbia, on July 21, 1971. He was buried in Capilano View Cemetery in West Vancouver.

Dorothy died in North Vancouver, British Columbia on September 14, 1972.

 

Cecil Edward Downing

Cecil Edward Downing was born in Brandon, New York State, on December 15, 1888.

He worked as a shipper.

In March 1916 he enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force and served with the Canadian forces in France. He was discharged on January 28, 1919, under the general demobilization.

After returning to British Columbia, he worked as a poultry farmer.

He never married.

He died in Vancouver on December 27, 1967.

 

Max Breeze Downing (sometimes John Max Breeze Downing)

Max Breeze Downing was born in Brandon, New York State, on July 19, 1892.

He worked as an architect.

On September 30, 1933, in Victoria, British Columbia, he married Jessie McKenzie McGregor. She was born in Revelstoke, British Columbia on December 18, 1899. Her parents were Alexander McGregor and Jessie McRae

Jessie died in Vancouver on October 25, 1946. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Max died in Vancouver on April 23, 1976. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.
