Samuel Dinsmore Stewart was a manufacturers’ agent. He lived at 1863 Comox Street from 1910 to 1916.

Samuel Dinsmore Stewart was born in Mono, Ontario, on December 24, 1870. His parents were John Stewart (1833-1904) and Catherine Suitor (1828–1904).

From 1871 to 1891, Samuel lived in Ontario with his parents.

Marriage to Rita

On December 22, 1909, in Vancouver, Samuel married Rita Findley. She was born in Victoria, British Columbia on March 7, 1882. Her parents were Franklin Samuel Findley (1861-1936) and Esther (“Hettie”) Jane Butler (1869-1941). Frank Findley was a travelling salesman for the Gold Seal Liquor Company.

Business and Domestic Life in Vancouver

Samuel continued to be a manufacturer’s agent for all of his business life. He also invested in real estate and participated in other commercial activities. He was a supporter of lacrosse in British Columbia.

In 1910, the provincial registrar of companies granted a licence for the Ontario-based Monarch Knitting Company Limited to carry on business in British Columbia. Samuel was the “attorney” (local contact person) for Monarch Knitting.

In March 1910, Samuel obtained a city permit to build a $5,000 frame house at 1863 Comox Street.

Samuel died in Toronto, Ontario, on October 8, 1923. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Most of his net estate of about $115,000 went to his wife and children, along with two small legacies for his sisters.

 

Rita’s Marriage to Frederick Templeton Collins

On January 23, 1924, in King County, Washington, Rita married Frederick Templeton Collins. He was born in Exeter, Ontario, on April 24, 1884. His parents were Washington Grant Collins (1848-1923) and Mary Templeton (1849-1932).

In 1918, Frederick had been drafted to serve in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. He served in France, and he was discharged on May 22, 1919, during the general demobilization after the war.

This marriage ended in divorce, and Frederick did not re-marry. He lived for a time in Trenton, Ontario. He died in Victoria, British Columbia, on December 28, 1949. He was buried in Royal Oak Burial Park in Victoria.

Rita and Children in California

Rita and her children were living in Los Angeles, California at the time of the 1930 United States census.

In 1932, Rita travelled from Vancouver to Hollywood, California. She was preparing to live there permanently.

Catherine Suitor Stewart (sometimes “Kathryn”) was born in Vancouver on December 26, 1910.

In 1911 and 1921 she was living with her parents in Vancouver.

In 1930 she was living with her mother in Los Angeles, California.

On October 24, 1931, in Los Angeles, she married Robert Hess Willison, who was a printer. He was born in Columbus, Ohio on June 6, 1907. His parents were Don W. Willison and Florence Hess.

In 1940, Kathryn and Robert were living in Los Angeles. Robert was working as a typographer.

In 1948, Kathryn became a naturalized United States citizen.

On May 4, 1968, in Los Angeles, Kathryn married William Francis McGrath, who was an accountant. He was born in New York on September 27, 1918. He had been a United States Navy pilot during the Second World War.

William died on June 25, 1996. He was buried in Pacific View Memorial Park in Corona del Mar, California.

John Wallace Stewart was born in Vancouver about 1912.

In 1921 he was living with his parents in Vancouver.

In 1930 he was living with his mother in Los Angeles, California.

No further information is available for him.

 

Donald Findley Stewart

Donald Findley Stewart was born in Vancouver on December 9, 1914.

In 1921 he was living with his parents in Vancouver.

In 1930 he was living with his mother in Los Angeles, California.

On May 29, 1941, in Las Vegas, Nevada, he married Kathleen (surname unknown). She was born in Norfolk, Virginia on March 25, 1921.

In 1943 he applied to become a naturalized United States citizen. He was a merchant marine seaman. He became a United States citizen on October 22, 1943.

William Dinsmore Stewart

William Dinsmore Stewart was born in Vancouver on September 19, 1916.

In 1930 he was living with his mother in Los Angeles, California.

He served with the United States military during the Second World War and the Korean War. As a result of his military service, he received a purple heart and a bronze star.

He died on October 23, 1956.

Samuel Douglas Stewart

Samuel Douglas Stewart was born in Vancouver on March 29, 1919. (He was sometimes known as “Douglas Stewart.”)

In 1930 he was living with his mother in Los Angeles, California.

On April 17, 1940, in Las Vegas, Nevada, he married Bobette (or Babette). She was born on January 19, 1920, in Waynesville, North Carolina. It appears that this marriage ended, perhaps by divorce.

In 1942 he applied to become a naturalized United States citizen. He was working as a machinist. He became a United States citizen on August 14, 1942.

From the early 1950s to the 1980s he worked as a film and television editor, often under the name “Douglas Stewart.” For his work on editing The Right Stuff, he won an Academy Award for best film editing. (His co-editors were Glenn Farr, Lisa Fruchtman, Stephen A. Rotter, and Tom Rolf.)

On April 1, 1971, in Reno, Nevada, he married Gloria Joy Hayes.

He died in Los Angeles on March 3, 1995.

Stewart’s film credits include “Games” (1967), “The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid” (1972), “The White Dawn” (1974), “The Shootist” (1976), Philip Kaufman’s 1978 remake of “Invasion of the Body Snatchers,” “Rough Cut” (1980), “Fast Walking” (1982), “Jinxed” (1982) and “The Right Stuff,” for which he and his co-editors – Glenn Farr, Lisa Fruchtman, Stephen A. Rotter and Tom Rolf – won an Oscar in 1983.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria; daughters Kim and Dawn; sons Shane and Cameron; and his sister, Kay.
