Alfred Frederick Houston was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in February 1866. (In some records his name appears as “Alfred Patrick Houston.”) His parents were Robert MacLorinan Houston and Margaret Black Tait.

In 1881, Alfred was a student at the Commercial Travellers Schools in Pinner, Middlesex, England. (His sister, Maggie, was also at the school in 1881.)

By 1891, Alfred was living in Montreal, Quebec. On August 29, 1891, in Montreal, he married Harriet Louisa Ross.

Alfred first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1911. He was a commercial agent, living at 1662 Georgia Street.

Harriet died in Vancouver on December 26, 1949. She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby.

Dorothy Margaret Houston

Dorothy Margaret Houston was born in Montreal, Quebec, on November 6, 1896.

On June 27, 1925, Dorothy married William James Roy MacLaren. He was born in Ottawa, Ontario, on January 11, 1897. His parents were Robert James MacLaren (1865-1952) and Mary Jane MacDonald (1863-1928). (William’s brother, Donald Roderick MacLaren, was a First World War fighter ace who later became prominent in the Canadian airline industry).

During the First World War, William served with the Royal Navy Auxiliary Reserve. In 1920, he was studying applied science at the Vancouver Academy.

He later studied general engineering at the University of British Columbia. (He appears in the list below, near the end of the “second class” heading.)

On May 27, 1928, William and Robert Reynolds were making a canoe trip on the Bow River in Alberta. They planned to paddle from Canmore to Calgary.

Near the mouth of the Kananaskis River, about one mile below the electric power plant, the canoe capsized. Mr. Reynolds managed to get to safety, but William was drowned.

Beginning in 1929, Dorothy was listed in the Vancouver directories under her own name. She worked as a stenographer and clerk at a series of businesses in Vancouver, including her later time with Spencer’s and Eaton’s department stores.

Dorothy died in Vancouver on October 12, 1978.

 

Robert Gordon Houston

Robert Gordon Houston was born on September 9, 1901, probably in Montreal.

He died in Montreal on September 6, 1907. He was buried in Mount Royal Cemetery in Montreal.

 

Charles Edgar Houston

Charles Edgar Houston was born in Montreal, Quebec, on September 9, 1901. (He was often called “Edgar.”)

On July 3, 1930, in Montreal, he married Anna Marie Hagood. She was born in Indiana on November 13, 1904. Her parents were Harrison Belles Hagood (1873–1964) and Harriet (“Hattie”) Louisa Wackner (1880–1966).

In 1931, Edgar was living in Chicago, Illinois.

In 1955 he was living in North Vancouver, British Columbia. He was a floor walker with Eaton’s department store in Vancouver.

Edgar died in Sechelt, British Columbia, on June 30, 1971.

Anna died on April 18, 1995 in North Vancouver, British Columbia.
