William Pepper was a butcher. He lived at 761 Denman Street from 1919 to 1929.

William Pepper was born in Royston, Hertfordshire, England, on March 18, 1878. His father was John George Pepper, who worked as a porter for a coal merchant. William’s mother was Mary Ann Coleman.

In 1898, William married Alice Maud Weal. She was born on March 9, 1878, in Brentwood, Essex, England. Her father was William E. Weal (although one source says her father was John Weal). Alice’s mother was Sarah Ann Couzens.

In 1901, the Pepper family was in Great Warley, Essex. In 1911, they were in Lewisham in London.

In July 1912, William and Alice, along with their four daughters, sailed to Quebec City on the Virginian. Their destination was Calgary, Alberta.

In 1913 and 1914, William was living at 1621 3rd Street N.W. in Calgary, Alberta. He was the manager of Pepper Brothers, which operated Swan Grocery and Meat Market. Swan Grocery had two locations: 1715 2nd Street E. and 407 16th Avenue N.W. Several other Pepper family members were also involved in the grocery business, including Arthur, George, and John.

William first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1916. He was a meat cutter, living at 2837 Woodland Drive. (His daughter, Ruby, also appeared in the directory in 1916.)

In the 1910s and 1920s the Pepper family lived at the following addresses in Vancouver.

1919 to 1929 761 Denman Street (listed as 961 Denman in 1923 and as 761 Dunbar in 1928)
1930 Not listed under Vancouver names

By 1918, William was associated with the Progress Market at 803 Granville Street. Douglas Stewart was the proprietor. William later had a series of butcher businesses, generally under the Pepper family name.

William and Alice continued to live in the Vancouver area through the 1940s.

William died in Vancouver on March 14, 1950. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Alice died on March 30, 1974, in Burnaby, British Columbia. She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby.

William and Alice had the following children.

 

Ruby Constance Maude Pepper

Ruby Constance Maude Pepper was born in Romford, Essex, England, on March 15, 1899.

She travelled to Canada with her parents in 1912.

She worked as a clerk.

On August 26, 1924, in Vancouver, Ruby married Robert Pealer Sapp, who was a confectioner. (In 1921, Robert had been lodging with William Pepper at 761 Denman Street.)

Robert was born Pike Township, Ohio, on April 17, 1883. His father was Robert D. Sapp. His mother was Clara F. Pealer.

Robert had been married before, in Toronto, Ontario, on December 8, 1904, to Alma Shefler. In 1910, Robert and Alma were living in Akron, Ohio. Robert was the operator of a confectionery store. In 1917, Robert was working at Richard C. Purdy’s confectionery shop in Vancouver. Robert and Alma were living at number 320, 540 Helmcken Street. This marriage ended in divorce.

In 1940, Robert was the proprietor of the Arcade Coffee Shop at 332 Water Street in Vancouver.

In 1950, Robert and Ruby were living at number 5, 2466 West Fourth Avenue in Vancouver.

Robert died in San Mateo, California, on October 27, 1963. He was buried in Alta Mesa Memorial Park, Palo Alto, Santa Clara, California.

Ruby died in Vancouver on December 4, 1991. She was buried in Alta Mesa Memorial Park in Palo Alto.

Robert and Ruby had a son, Robert Eugene Sapp. He was born in Vancouver on February 19, 1926. In 1991 he was living in Brooksville, Florida. He died in Brooksville on November 10, 2003.

 

Dorothy Violet Pepper

Dorothy Violet Pepper was born in Romford, Essex, England, on July 9, 1901.

On July 30, 1924, in Vancouver, she married Clifford Potts, who was a salesman. He was born on June 1, 1898, in Crewe Cheshire, England. His father was Charles Potts. His mother was Kathleen Brown.

Clifford later worked in the painting business. He died in North Vancouver, British Columbia, on March 27, 1982. He was buried in Capilano View Cemetery in West Vancouver, British Columbia.

Dorothy died in North Vancouver on December 12, 1988.

 

Gwendoline Daisy Pepper

Gwendoline Daisy Pepper was born in Romford, Essex, England, on September 17, 1904. (She was sometimes called “Gwennie.”)

On June 8, 1923, in New Westminster, British Columbia, she married Charles Twist, who was a sign writer. He was born in England about 1899. His parents were Charles Edward Jones Twist and Sarah Twist. This marriage ended in divorce in Vancouver on June 7, 1945.

Gwendoline later married John Haydu. He was born in Hungary on May 15, 1898. His father was John Haydu.

Joh died in Vancouver on March 3, 1971. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Gwendoline died in Vancouver on April 8, 1988.

 

Marjorie Edith Pepper

Marjorie Edith Pepper was born on February 22, 1910, probably in Sydenham, Kent (although one source says that she was born in Saskatchewan).

In 1911 she was living with her parents in Lewisham, in southeast London.

In 1912 she travelled with her parents to Canada.

In 1921, she was living with her parents in Vancouver.

On March 5, 1932, in Kitsap, Washington, Marjorie married Lucius John Boardman, who was a construction engineer. He was born on December 31, 1884, in Buffalo, New York. His father was Theron Boardman. His mother was Myra Hubbard. (There is another record for the marriage of Lucius and Marjorie, with a date of December 21, 1936.) Lucius had been married before, to Martha M. Stephens. This marriage ended in divorce.

Marjorie died in Everett, Washington, on March 24, 1937.

Lucius died in Seattle, Washington, on September 12, 1954.

Marjorie and Lucius had two children.

Myra Maude Boardman was born in Seattle, Washington, on May 18, 1933. She married John “Archie” Moore. Myra died at the Cornerstone Villa in Buhl, near Hibbing, Minnesota, on June 18, 2013. John died at the Cornerstone Villa in Buhl on April 6, 2014.

Daryl J. Boardman was born in in Seattle, Washington, on December 3, 1934. He lived in Seattle until he moved to Minnesota in 1987. He settled in Britt, Minnesota, in 1997. He died in Duluth, Minnesota on September 8, 2007.
