Rowland Sanders Darby operated a confectionery at 1178 Denman Street in 1920.

Rowland Sanders Darby was born on June 18, 1884, in Beccles, Suffolk, England. His father was Albert William Darby (1850-1915), who was a timber merchant and amateur yachtsman. Rowland’s mother was Christian Brissenden Marley (1855-1942).

In the 1901 English census, Rowland was living in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. (The census gave his occupation as “sleeping clerk,” although it is not clear that this is accurate.)

Rowland arrived in Canada in August 1904. He described himself as a farmer, and his destination was Treherne, about 50 kilometres west of Winnipeg, Manitoba.

By 1905 he was Treherne’s representative for a proposed military legion for Winnipeg.

In 1906 he was living in the Souris district of Manitoba.

By 1912, he was the acting manager for the Bank of British North America in the village of Rhein, which is about 20 kilometres northeast of Yorkton in eastern Saskatchewan.

On May 22, 1916, in Macleod, Alberta, he enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force to serve during the First World War.

It appears that he was married in 1917 (either on March 2 or February 3). His wife’s given names were “Christine M.J.”

Although Rowland became a regimental quartermaster sergeant, his military service ended when he was discharged from the military forces on March 21, 1917. His flat feet made him physically unfit for active service.

Rowland and Christine arrived in Vancouver about 1920. Rowland operated a confectionery business at 1178 Denman Street in 1920 and at 497 Broadway in 1921. Rowland did not appear in the Vancouver directories after 1921.

Rowland and Christine moved to the United States about 1922. By 1923, it appears that they were living at 1817b Bellevue Avenue in Los Angeles, California.

In 1930, they were in Los Angeles, California. Rowland was an insurance agent.

In 1932, Rowland was a representative of the Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States.

Rowland later moved to England. He died on November 19, 1954, in Norfolk.

Christine may have died in Suffolk, England, in 1958.

It appears that Rowland and Christine did not have any children.
