William Henry Harvey operated a wood creosoting business at 1803 Georgia Street from 1903 to 1909. In 1909 the business was called Dominion Carbolineum Works Limited. (In 1903 and 1904 the other member of the business sometimes appears as “Van Valck” and sometimes as “Van Slack.” No further information is available for this person.)

William Henry Harvey was born on December 19, 1845, in Barony, now part of Glasgow, Scotland. His parents were James Harvey and Christiana Dove Arthur.

William travelled to Canada about 1865.

On June 26, 1877, in Brantford, Ontario, William married Helen Maria Watt. She was born about 1853 (or 1856) in Brantford, Ontario. Her parents were William and Elsie Watt.

In 1881, the Harveys were in Meaford, in Grey County, Ontario.

In 1891 and 1901, they were in Toronto. William was a commercial traveller.

The Harveys arrived in Vancouver about 1902. William Harvey first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1903.

Shortly after arriving in Vancouver, William established his creosoting business at 1803 Georgia Street. The company was successful, and, after about 10 years, William moved the business to a larger site in South Vancouver.

In 1923, William sold his business to Robertson and Hackett Sawmills.

William died in Vancouver on February 9, 1933.

Helen died in Vancouver on April 4, 1934.

William and Helen had the following children.

 

Elsie Harvey (daughter of William Henry Harvey)

Elsie Harvey was born in Brantford, Ontario, about 1878.

She died in Toronto on May 11, 1892. She was buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Brantford.

 

William Watt Harvey

William Watt Harvey was born in Meaford, Ontario, on October 9, 1883.

In 1891 and 1901 he was living with his parents.

William married Nellie Westerdale Barker. She was born in Astoria, Oregon, on August 3, 1883. Her parents were William Henry Barker (1853-1929) and Orpha Ann Beard (1861-1937). (The Barker family lived at 1846 Haro Street in 1908. Further information appears on the page for William Henry Barker (1853-1929).)

Willam and Nellie continued to live in the Vancouver area until the 1950s.

William died in Surrey, British Columbia, on January 6, 1958. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Nellie died in Vancouver on February 8, 1959.

 

Arthur Allan Harvey

Arthur Allan Harvey was born in Meaford, Ontario on April 4, 1885.

In 1891, 1901 and 1911 he was living with his parents.

On April 9, 1912, in Vancouver, he married Mary Sclater. She was born in the Orkney Islands on June 10, 1891. Her parents were James Sclater and Mary Sinclair.

In November 1915, Arthur enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force to serve during the First World War. He was wounded during the war, and he died on May 13, 1917. He was buried in Bristol (Canford) Cemetery in Gloucestershire, England.

Mary later lived in Victoria, British Columbia. She died in Victoria on March 26, 1962.

 

Norman Liddell Harvey

Norman Liddell Harvey was born in Toronto, Ontario, on May 4, 1887.

In 1891 and 1901 he was living with his parents in Toronto.

On February 11, 1911, in Toronto, Norman married Lena Kathleen Crosby. She was born in Toronto on October 17, 1887. Her parents were Albert Barton Crosby and Florence Jane Pettigrew.

At the time of the 1911 Canada census, Norman and Lena were living in Toronto.

In 1921, they were in Edmonton, Alberta. Norman was a wholesale coal dealer.

Norman died in Vancouver on September 14, 1958. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Lena died in Vancouver on September 23, 1974.

 

Isobel Harvey

Isobel Harvey was born on November 1, 1893, in Toronto, Ontario.

In 1935 she was an assistant deputy superintendent with the government of British Columbia. By 1940 she had become a superintendent.

She never married.

She died in Vancouver on September 10, 1951.

“The death occurred Thursday afternoon of William Henry Harvey. Born in Glasgow 88 years ago, Mr. Harvey came to Canada as a young man. In 1900, after many years spent in Ontario and the eastern United States, he took up residence in Vancouver.

Here he organized and owned the company later known as the Dominion Creosoting and Lumber Company, which was active in logging, sawmilling and creosoting. He was instrumental in building its plant, Dominion mills, in Vancouver south.

Since 1923, when he sold his interest in this organization to the Robertson & Hackett Sawmills, he has been retired from active business. Notwithstanding his advanced age he was active until a few weeks ago, when he contracted the illness which caused his death.

In 1877 he married Miss Helen Watt of Brantford, Ontario, who, with their daughter, Miss Isobel Harvey, survives him at the family residence, 4212 Cypress Street. He leaves also two sons, William W. and Norman L., and four grandchildren. Another son, A. Allan Harvey, was killed overseas.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. from the chapel of Center & Hanna.”
