Robert Fenton Mather was the manager of Davis Hartney and Company, which was a firm of electricians with offices at 1150 Hamilton Street. He lived at 1934 Barclay Street in 1917 and probably 1918 (although the streets directory listed him at 1940 Barclay Street).

Robert Fenton Mather was born in Ottawa, Ontario, on January 23, 1884. (He was sometimes called “R. Fenton Mather,” “R.F. Mather,” or “Fenton Mather.”) His parents were Robert Addison Mather (1851-1925) and Maud Cameron (about 1855-1932).

Robert Addison Mather was in the lumber business. In 1878, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, he married Maud Cameron. The family lived in Ottawa and Keewatin, Ontario, and moved to Vancouver in 1907.

Robert Addison Mather died in Vancouver on October 18, 1925. He was buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Burnaby, British Columbia.

His wife, Maud, died in Vancouver on December 15, 1932. She was buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Burnaby.

 

Robert Fenton Mather’s Early Years

Robert Fenton Mather was living with his parents in Keewatin, Ontario, in 1891 and 1901.

By 1906 he was in Lac du Bonnet, about 115 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg, Manitoba.

He first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1909, living with his parents at 969 Jervis Street. He had established a machinery dealership called Mather and Yuill.

The “Yuill” in the firm was Alexander Claude Roy Yuill (1880-1970), a civil engineer who worked on many large projects in Canada. One of those was an installation at Lac du Bonnet, Manitoba, which may be where he met Robert Fenton Mather.

By 1911, Mather, Yuill and Company described its role as “electrical engineers and contractors”:

On November 29, 1911, in the Rural Municipality of Virden, Manitoba, Robert married Alice Ida Eaton.

Alice was born on February 3, 1888, in Toronto, Ontario. Her parents were John Murray Eaton (1857-1939) and Emma Louise Scott (1867-1923). John Murray Eaton was a physician who had a medical practice in Carberry and Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Alice had been working as a nurse at the Ninette Sanatarium, which was a tuberculosis hospital near Ninette, Manitoba. Her aunt, Margaret Eaton, was the matron at the sanatorium.

Robert’s Business and Life in Vancouver

In April 1914, Robert was the “attorney for service” for Boving and Company of Canada Limited when it applied to do business in British Columbia.

In the 1915 Vancouver directory, Robert was the manager of Boving and Company.

In 1918, Robert became the representative of the Dominion Bridge Company.

Alice died in Niagara Falls, New York on October 10, 1918. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

In 1927 Robert was the general manager of Pacific Lime Company.

In 1928 he became the general manager of the Kingsley Navigation Company.

Later Life in Vancouver

By 1929, Robert was married to Ruth Irene Owens, who was born in Oakdale, California, on October 17, 1892. Her parents were Harry Vernon Owens (1865-1963) and Almina (“Minnie”) Pearl Mann (1865-1946).

By 1934, Ruth appeared in the Vancouver directory with Robert. (Robert’s daughter, Margaret, was also living with them.)

Robert died at Ballantyne Pier in Vancouver on October 22, 1936. He was meeting with the master of his company’s ship, “S.S. Rochelie.”

While Robert was leaning over to speak with the ship’s captain, he stumbled and fell, hitting his head and dying almost instantly.

Ruth later went to live in California. She died in San Jose, California, on October 26, 1983. She was buried in the Oakdale Citizens Cemetery in Oakdale, California.

Robert Murray Mather

Robert Murray Mather was born in Vancouver on February 14, 1914. (He was often called “Murray.”)

He attended the University of British Columbia. In 1934-1935, he was a junior member of the Alma Mater Society of UBC; in 1935-1936, he was the president of the society.

On April 8, 1939, in Victoria, British Columbia, Murray married Elena Elizabeth (“Tita”) Hall. She was born in Victoria about 1915. Her parents were Henry Charles Hall (1883-1962) and Margaret Elena Fernau (1879-1957).

Murray worked in the shipping business. In 1950 he was with the Seaboard Shipping Company Limited.

Murray died in North Vancouver, British Columbia, on March 8, 1984.

It appears that Tita later lived in Sechelt, British Columbia, and that she died in July 2000.

 

Margaret Catherine Mather

Margaret Catherine Mather was born in Vancouver on September 10, 1912.

She married Oliph Leigh (“Bill”) Leigh-Spencer, who was born in Calgary, Alberta, on February 22, 1915. His parents were Oliph Leigh Spencer (1884-1965) and Helen Louise Haszard (1884-1961). Bill studied at the University of Alberta, and served with the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve during the Second World War.

Bill died on July 2, 1999.

Margaret died in Delta, British Columbia, on October 3, 2010.

 

Fenton Douglas Mather

Fenton Douglas Mather was born in Vancouver about June 24, 1915.

He died in Vancouver on February 11, 1916. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.
